Pondok Pesantren Laki-laki As-Sodomiyah Last week it made some headlines, but I didn't have the time to get back to it right away. Well, that should be special new then, right? Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be that special. Hardly any attention was given to it in Indonesia, at least not of the stone-throwing and firebombing kind of attention that we should expect with this kind of news.

Local Muslims reject arrival of Abu Bakar Ba'ashir The plan of religious leader Abu Bakar Ba'ashir to bring a visit to Lumajang has caused a strong reaction from local Muslims. They reject the arrival of the Muslem cleric from Solo. They say that a majority of the people in Lumajang will feel uneasy with a visit from him. "We strongly are against a visit of Abu Bakar Ba'ashir to Lumajang," said Abdurrohim, one of the Islamic leaders from the Tompokersan sub-district in Lumajang.

Religious boarding school for 'waria' in Yogyakarta When the Ramadan arrives, the 'waria' (wanita-pria or shemale) also have the need to join others for their prayers in a local mosque. But there is still a negative effect surrounding them. They are lucky enough to have a religious leader (ustadz) which noticed this problem and decided to open a religious boarding school for shemales in Notoyudan, Yogyakarta. "Here we are humans again. We learn to recite prayers together, break the fast together and thing like that. All activities are done together," said Arief.

Members of FPI run into police raid in downtown Jakarta Dozens of members from the FPI (Islamic Defenders Front) who were headed to Istana Negara - the state palace - ran into a police raid in the Semanggi area. The group dressed in mainly white which used cars and motorbikes were stopped for not wearing helmets and not being able to show their driving licenses. Furthermore the group was stopped for bringing flags and other attributes because it endangered other road users.

Jakarta safe at Christmas Eve The situation of Jakarta`s security was reported to be safe during which thousands of Christians were celebrating their Christmas eve at respective church on Saturday evening. "Up till now, the security of Jakarta is safe and under control. Security apparatuses remain standing on guard to safeguard the churches and some areas prone to security disturbance," Chief of the Jakarta Police Headquarter`s Information Service Senior Commissioner Ketut Untung Yoga Ana said here on Saturday evening.

Anti-terror officers deployed to villages again The Indonesian Military (TNI) is reactivating its intelligence unit that used to work within the community to help the police fight terrorism. The military unit, comprising non-commissioned officers known as Babinsa, would gather all information required to help prevent acts of terrorism, TNI chief Gen. Endriartono Sutarto announced.

Jakarta floods force minister to take ojek Torrential rainfall flooded parts of Jakarta early Wednesday (19/1/05), causing severe traffic congestion that forced Manpower and Transmigration Minister Fahmi Idris to take an ojek (motorbike taxi) to work. Idris left his house near Jalan Warung Buncit, South Jakarta, in his chauffeur-driven Volvo limousine supplied by the state, but the vehicle soon became trapped in the gridlock in the floodwaters. The minister then exited his stationary vehicle and hailed an ojek to take him to a meeting at the vice presidential office, detikcom online news portal reported. The ride on the Suzuki Thunder motorbike reportedly cost the minister Rp50,000 ($5.45) well above the usual fare for such a journey.

Indonesia secures churches as fears of terror attacks grow Muslim-dominated Indonesia on Monday ordered more security at potential flashpoints after renewed attacks on Christian churches sparked fears of a repeat of deadly Christmas Eve bombings four years ago. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told police chiefs to be on alert for possible terrorist attacks around the country after two attacks on churches in Central Sulawesi province late Sunday left three people seriously injured.
