Thick smog over Riau because of forest fires Forest fires once again burn forests in Riau province in southern Sumatra. Almost the entire provice is now covered in a curtain of smog. The Meteorologica, Climatological and Geophysics Agency BMKG in the city of Pekanbaru has said that the most recent sattelite images show at least 50 hot spots in southern Sumatra alone.

EU to send air safety experts to Indonesia The European Union will send safety experts to Indonesia for the review of an EU ban on Indonesian airlines which started last Friday, said the ambassador of the EU to Indonesia. All 51 airlines, including national carrier Garuda Indonesia, have been barred from entering European airspace because of safety concerns. Although no Indonesian airline currently flies to the EU, the ban obliges tourist agencies to warn customers that the airlines are unsafe if they sell package tours with these carriers.

EU bans flights by Indonesian airlines All airlines that have their base in Indonesia will be banned from flying to the European Union because of safety concerns. This information has been released by the European Commission. "Once more, the EU blacklist will prove to be an essential tool not only to prevent unsafe airlines from flying to Europe and to inform passengers traveling worldwide but also to make sure that airlines and civil aviation authorities take appropriate actions to improve safety," said Jacques Barrot, commission vice president in charge of transport.

Airline ratings to be announced this week The government will announce the results of an audit on Indonesia's airliners this week, as was told by the general aviation chief earlier today. The audit came after immense pressure to improve air safety following a series of accidents in the last months.The team, set up by the government to evaluate transport safety, has recommended that airliners found to have violated safety regulations to be closed.

East Timorese people begin to regret secesion from Indonesia Many people in East Timor which gained independence from Indonesia through a United Nations-sponsored referendum in August 1999 have begun to regret the secession, Mrs. Domingos, an East Timorese woman visiting her relatives here said on Friday. "Independence from Indonesia is being enjoyed by only a certain group of people while the majority in remote areas have been living in deepening misery since the secession," Domingos said.

Scores of weapons confiscated from Gus Dur supporters Police seized hundreds of weapons and arrested 22 people as thousands of President Abdurrahman Wahid supporters from East Java arrived here on Tuesday. Jakarta Police Detective Chief Sr. Comr. Adang Rochana said the people were arrested at city bus terminals and railway stations for possessing illegal weapons. Police questioned an additional 100 people but later released them.
