Indonesia set for fuel cost rise Indonesia is to raise nationwide fuel prices from 1 October, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has announced. The controversial decision comes as the country moves to cut fuel subsidies in response to the soaring cost of oil. President Yudhoyono said his government would go ahead with the fuel price rise, but did not say by how much.

Hail, strong winds hit Bandung A downpour, compounded by hail and strong winds in some places, hit Bandung city on Thursday afternoon, toppling dozens of trees and causing flooding in some parts of the city. However, an official from the Bandung office of the Geophysics and Meteorological Agency (BMG) quickly rejected suggestions that the rain, which came after several months of drought in the city, marked the start of the wet season in Bandung, the capital of West Java province.

Suharto era continues to cloud Indonesia's political life A.M. Fatwa, the deputy speaker of Indonesia's parliament, has cause to be angry. In 1984, after protesting against the massacre by soldiers of Islamic activists near Jakarta's port of Tanjung Priok, he was arrested, tortured and then spent nine years in prison, five years under house arrest and wrote 13 books highlighting the abuses of the 32-year rule of the former president Suharto.

Aceh faces state of emergency Indonesian Military Commander Gen. Ryamizard Ryacudu said that in line with the president's instructions, the military and police in Aceh would take tough action against members of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). Indonesian press reports quoted the official news service Antara as saying the government had exhausted avenues for dialogue with GAM, adding that murders and kidnappings carried out by the separatists amounted to "acts of terorism."
