Bali named 'number two' by Lonely Planet Bali has been named one of the best regions in the world to visit in a new Lonely Planet travel guide. The famed Island of the Gods came in second behind Alsace in France, and ahead of Fernando de Noronha in Brazil. Lake Baikal in Russia was the other Asian region to make the top 10 list.

Bali restaurants make Miele's top 10 Asian list Bali's Mozaic Restaurant Gastronomique and KuDeTa have been voted among the Top 10 Restaurant in Asia in the 2009 edition of the Miele Guide. At an award ceremony held in Singapore on September 30, 2009, Mozaic Restaurant was ranked #6 and KuDeTa #9 among the 10 dining venues considered the very best in Asia by Miele.

Jakarta airport operator to open budget terminal Domestic terminals at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Cengkareng, west of Jakarta, may soon be able to share the burden of ever-increasing passengers, with a new terminal to be built especially for low-cost carriers. Airport administrator PT Angkasa Pura II plans to renovate its haj terminal this year into a budget-airlines terminal, said the company's public relations manager, M. Wasfan, on Wednesday.

Indonesia quake toll spirals to 45,268 The death toll from Sunday's devastating earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia has risen to 45,268, according to a health ministry spokesman here Wednesday. The spokesman said the added number was due to the previously unaccounted-for district around Banda Aceh, the hardest hit coastline area on the northwestern tip of Sumatra island.

Suharto tops world corruption league Former dictator Suharto has topped a list of the world's most corrupt politicians over the past two decades. The list is part of Transparency International's new Global Corruption Report 2004, which charts the flow of stolen assets, recommends ways to recover money looted by despots, and sets out new standards on political finance and favors. Transparency International says Suharto stole about $15 billion to $35 billion during his 32 years of rule in a country where the Gross Domestic Product per capita hovers at around $700.

Indonesia becomes the puffer's paradise Indonesia has reaffirmed its status as a cigarette manufacturer's and puffer's paradise. Early last month, the Finance Ministry announced a freeze on excise tax hikes on cigarettes for this year in an effort to encourage local cigarette manufacturers to boost their annual production to 200 billion sticks, about 1,000 cigarettes per capita. The policy decision flies in the face of international norms; most governments nowadays urge their populations to smoke less to avoid cigarette-related diseases and unnecessary deaths.
