Need for fuel does not decline with higher prices For most Indonesians it came as unexpected as ever. With a shortage of foreign news, strictly regulated by the Indonesian government, it was not in the line of expectations of the average man in the street that fuel prices might just be hiked with one third all of a sudden. However almost the entire population of this planet knows what the current market price of a barrel of crude oil is - somewhere about 130 US dollar - Indonesia assumed that everything was fine. Use of fuel would decrease, prices would come down and nationwide production was to rise as well.

Two neighbors but a completely different world It is a completely random day at the end of August. Time to catch a plane to head for a new destination. Fortunately I know what is waiting for me on the other side. This is, for me personally, a lot less stress. I tend to arrange everything into the smallest details, and that from someone that tries to build a life in Indonesia. Yeah, I know, it sounds strange, but until now it was relatively easy for that matter. The bright red AirAsia plane touches down after about two hours of flight. The environment still is tropical and green. It is clouded, that is the only thing I notice directly. That means that here at least I can see what kind of weather it is, because that is a big difference than just two hours ago. Because Jakarta is always covered under a thick layer of brown smog and other lethal stuff.

Pertamina's LPG marketing assistant manager Rosidi Hasyim was quoted Friday by The Jakarta Post daily as saying the firm had suffered a financial loss of 900 billion rupiah (90 million US dollars) per year because the domestic LPG price was lower than the international price. Subsidy cut to fuel the fire In the wake of a two-month "mini crisis" that saw the rupiah hit a four-year low of 11,750 per dollar on August 30, Jakarta has finally announced an imminent and substantial reduction in fuel subsidies. The exact date and the level of cuts have yet to be announced, though there is widespread speculation over both. Vice President Jusuf Kalla has said fuel prices may rise as early as October 1 while National Development Planning Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has said an increase in November would be too late to help reduce subsidies to the level of Rp89.2 trillion. She said fuel prices might increase by at least 50% in October.

Yudhoyono likely to survive fuel price rise protest Indonesia's looming fuel price increases Saturday will power protests that will bruise, but not cripple, the government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, analysts say. A government compensation plan and timing of the fuel price increase for the eve of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan will help defuse public anger over the cut in price subsidies that have given Indonesians some of the cheapest fuel in the world for decades.

Why Indonesia must consider abolishing Rupiah The crisis of confidence that has come back to haunt the rupiah for the second time in eight years is making some analysts wonder if Indonesia would be better off without a central bank. After all, what's the good of having a monetary authority when it can't protect the purchasing power of the currency it issues?

Free election marks crossroads for Indonesia Six years into the uncertainties of multiparty democracy, Indonesians are electing a new legislature Monday after a campaign shadowed by nostalgia for two former authoritarian rulers -- one dead, the other disgraced. President Megawati Sukarnoputri's government is struggling with economic weakness, secessionist rebellions and the emergence of Muslim terrorists. But there is little debate on economic policy or Muslim extremism, critical though these issues are to this sprawling country of 210 million people scattered across 17,000 islands.
