Island-wide power blackout hits Bali Bali experienced an island-wide power outage on Saturday night, July 12, 2014 that started just before 9:00 p.m. local time with electricity only returning to Sanur, in Baliís south, at midnight.The deputy spokesman for the State Power Board (PT PLN) for East Java, Arkad Matulu, blamed a ďtechnical disturbanceĒ for the power outage.

More power needed to power Bali Bali Post predicts that by 2013 Bali will be facing an electrical crisis made all the more acute by large scale infrastructure projects scheduled to come on line in time for the Asia Pacific Economic Forum (APEC) Summit scheduled for late 2013. Among the projects cited as placing an added, and possibly unsupportable burden, on Baliís electrical grid are the new toll way, the expansion of Baliís airport, the Bali International Park Project (BIP) and the opening of a number large hotel projects.

Boskalis gets contract for Indonesian submarine power cables Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. has signed a contract with Samsung for the construction of a cable laying ship. The vessel will have a length of over 100 meters and a loading capacity of 5.000 tons. It is expected that the vessel will be delivered in the second half of 2012. Royal Boskalis Westminster B.V. has also won a contract with a value of 20 million euro for two submarine cables between the island of Java and Bali in Indonesia.

KRI Banjarmasin handed over to Indonesian Navy State shipbuilder PT PAL handed over a new warship to the Defense Ministry on Saturday and will produce a more sophisticated combat vessel, Antara news agency reported. The construction of the KRI Banjarmasin is part of a program to rejuvenate the Indonesian Navy fleet. Financial constraints have forced the Navy to keep many aging vessels operating, leaving them vulnerable to accidents.

Plane search focuses on undersea object A U.S. navy ship is set to join on Tuesday the search for an Indonesian airliner with 102 people on board missing for the past eight days, with the hunt focusing on a large metal object detected deep on the sea bed. The object was discovered on Monday by Indonesian ships with sonar technology about 1,000 metres (1,150 yards) under the ocean north of Mamuju in West Sulawesi province.

Subsidy cut to fuel the fire In the wake of a two-month "mini crisis" that saw the rupiah hit a four-year low of 11,750 per dollar on August 30, Jakarta has finally announced an imminent and substantial reduction in fuel subsidies. The exact date and the level of cuts have yet to be announced, though there is widespread speculation over both. Vice President Jusuf Kalla has said fuel prices may rise as early as October 1 while National Development Planning Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has said an increase in November would be too late to help reduce subsidies to the level of Rp89.2 trillion. She said fuel prices might increase by at least 50% in October.
