Snipers on the highway? The local police in some districts along the northern highway over the island of Java will install snipers on points where crime is rampant. The snipers will be placed between Situbondo and Banyuwangi in East Java province during the Idul Fitri travel period. "As many as 30 snipers will be placed in the highway to reduce crime rate during the holidays," said Sapto Nugroho, of the Besuku Police.

Back to Bali: Bombs, cocktails and surfers I managed to hop over to Bali for a few days last week in order to both soothe my metro madness and also to see how the old island was faring after the recent bombings. Lion Air did the honors for about Rp 900,000 return, which is pretty good value, I guess, although anyone hovering around the six-foot-tall mark will have a few comfort issues to deal with when trying to squeeze into their cattle-class seats. After 90 minutes with my knees around my chin we touched down at Ngurah Rai airport in the rain and a taxi whisked me down to Legian.

Troops try to quell Ambon unrest, 30 killed Snipers killed one policeman and wounded two in Indonesia's strife-torn Ambon on Tuesday as police and soldiers patrolled the streets to restore order, officials and witnesses said. The death toll from clashes between Christian and Muslim residents rose to 30, police said, but most of the deaths were from fighting on Sunday, and there were signs the violence in the capital of the eastern Moluccas islands was easing.

Indonesia to hold vote despite delays The justice minister has threatened to arrest election officials, thousands of polling stations still don't have ballots and parts of Aceh province are too dangerous to hold a vote. Nonetheless Indonesia will hold parliamentary elections Monday for the second time since the fall of the longtime dictator Suharto in 1998 - though election officials acknowledge voting will be delayed for up to five days in the remote regions of Papua and West Irian Jaya.

Three years ago, Kadir Faizal commanded great respect on the waterfront. Nobody cared that the Muslim leader of the longshoreman's union was married to a Christian and lived in her neighborhood. But now, Faizal is an infidel in the eyes of his Muslim colleagues at the harbor.

Emergency status in Maluku takes effect at snail's pace With open attacks largely suppressed in Ambon, sniper fire has become the most immediate concern for many residents. Throughout the city sporadic solo gunfire, believed to come from gunmen hiding in ruble and vacated buildings, could be heard as the state of civil emergency in Maluku and North Maluku entered its third day on Thursday.
