Jokowi clarifies smear campaign before Banten ulemas Presidential hopeful Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has clarified smear campaign against him when he met ulemas at Al-Khairiyah Islamic boarding school in Cilegon. "Rumors saying that I will abolish rice distribution for the poor and the teacher certification program are slander. In fact, if Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla pair wins, we will increase them," Jokowi said here on Tuesday.

Indonesia denies Corby bribery claims The Indonesian embassy has strongly denied suggestions that the prosecutors in Schapelle Corby's drug-smuggling case have sought bribes. Suggestions of bribery in the Corby case were first raised in a radio interview between broadcaster Alan Jones and Ron Bakir, the Gold Coast businessman who is funding the Gold Coast woman's defence.

Susilo team reports tabloid for smear campaign Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's campaign team has reported the Fakta tabloid newspaper to the General Elections Supervisory Board for articles it says are part of a dirty tricks campaign by supporters of President Megawati Soekarnoputri to smear the presidential challenger. Team lawyers Harry Witjaksono Sh, Antawiriya and Bambang called for Panwaslu to investigate the irresponsible reports and to stop the distribution of the tabloid.

Gen. I will serve my term: President Abdurrahman Despite mounting calls for his resignation, President Abdurrahman Wahid said on Friday that he will serve his term which ends in 2004. "According to the Constitution I may remain to be president until 2004 and I am intent on doing my duties the best I can until the end of my term... so there is no need to be afraid," Abdurrahman said after Friday prayers near his private residence in Ciganjur, South Jakarta.

Security guards protect footbridge near Le Meridien Anyone using the footbridge in front of the Le Meridien hotelon Jl. Sudirman in Central Jakarta will notice the presence of several security guards, each equipped with a combat knife and stick, standing by the bridge. At a glance, people might think that the guards, who wear light blue uniforms, gray berets and an armband that reads Polda Metro Jaya (Jakarta Police), are policemen. But they are actually employed by a private security company hired by thehotel management to watch the bridge.
