Something remarkable to me is the limited number of SMS messages or telephone calls that I received. That seems to be coincidence, but it isn't. Most people don't even know that I am pulang kampung, but the main reason is the simple fact that the network of my provider XL is not available for most time here. At some moments when the weather is good - so the wet season like now is an even worse time - I can barely send or receive an SMS here now. Making a telephone call is simply not possible.

If you have already made the trip to the rice fields you will notice that it is extremely quiet here when you take a break yourself. Yeah, the title looks like pure fraud, but that doesn't seem to be completely true though. For some time now, about one and a half year, Yogyakarta has its own ice rink for those who want to skate some rounds or just want to do crazy on two of those thin metal strips under your feel. That is at least what they say in advertisements for the ice rink. That reality is slightly different than in those advertisements, is not really amazing. However the leaflet got in a pile 'still to do' somewhere on my desk, I already had the chance to have a look what the fuss was all about.

I have to admit, it is somewhere far outside any holiday season in the middle of November, maybe that will help create the almost deserted Kuta around this time of year. It was a short trip of about one hour from the beating cultural and religious heart of Bali, Ubud. With a virtually blue sky I left the spiritual village on a rented Mio (scooter), heading for the hot lowlands and crowds of Southern Bali. That crowd was a relative thing here, but seen from Ubud almost everything in the outside world looks crowded.

It didn't last another five minutes again before I felt the first rain coming down. And it wasn't water thrown up by the tires of trucks and buses but rain. I assumed that I drove too far for the passing rainstorm, but that was an illusion. The real situation was much more wet than those few drops of rain, but it would only be clear later on. Since the rain was intensifying I decided to take a break somewhere along the road - no idea where - to drink a glass of hot jeruk hangat (hot water with a small orange squeezed in it) and a Sampoerna cigarette. Just to get oversight about the situation.

Departing from the flatlands from the beach of Parangtritis I decided to head east for a little while. The small mountain road up is a very nice route with generally good road conditions. It is a trip into history a little bit with houses made of bamboo and plaid work mats as walls which you will find here in some places. There are here, at just several dozen kilometers distance from the city of Yogyakarta, still villages that don't even have access to power at all.

In the soaring heat of the countryside just north of the southern beaches near Yogyakarta I was driving towards the east on a small countryside road. This road is the only way out for the area directly west of the Opak River which causes the area to be fairly quiet until today. There are no main roads here, no buses and trucks but palm trees, open rice fields, parked bicycles and a strait black asphalt road which seems to disintegrate into water in the remote distance because of the scorching hot sun.

The Indonesian government has said that it is unlikely to import rice from other countries this year because of a sufficient stock after nationwide harvests. This reduces the pressure on the tight global supplies in times of record-breaking rice prices. Prices of Thai rice - a benchmark for the market - have doubled since the start of this year mainly because of rising demand from China and African nations. Vietnam and India have already decided to curb exports to protect their own markets.

Some days you will most likely not have a full agenda so you can finally do something that has been waiting for some time. Earlier this month I had such a day, I have more than one a month fortunately, but I can not always do what I want because the weather often has to be nice as well. This time it was jack pot; a nice blue sky in the early morning and some small clouds at the time I was about to depart for a days out. My plan was to take a motorbike trip to the beach of Samas.
