Shark sanctuary declared in eastern Indonesia Misool Eco Resort and Shark Savers on Tuesday announced that a Shark Sanctuary has been declared for the entire 17,760 square miles of Raja Ampat, Indonesia, located in the eastern region of the country. Bupati Drs Marcus Wanma, the Regent of Raja Ampat, made this historic declaration, demonstrating leadership in marine conservation.

Malaysia returns 4 smuggled orangutans to Indonesia Four orangutans, which were most likely abducted from the jungles of Borneo, have been returned to Indonesia on Friday after spending several years in a zoo in Malaysia and a theme park. Two of the great apes, Dodi and Linda, were send to a zoo in the state of Malacca for four years after wildlife officials seized them from another location on the suspicion that they had been smuggled to Malaysia, told Mohamad Nawayai Yasak, the director of Malacca Zoo.

A third of Borneo to be conserved, new declaration passed An historic declaration to conserve the "Heart of Borneo" was officially signed today between the three Bornean governments - Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia. The tri-country declaration will conserve and sustainably manage one of the most important centers of biological diversity in the world. The Heart of Borneo is an area of equatorial rainforest larger than Kansas, covering nearly a third of the island.

Burmese migrants blown off course to Indonesia A boatload of 77 Burmese men has landed on a small island off the coast of Indonesia's northwestern Aceh province after bad weather blew them off course. Their original destination was Malaysia, where they were hoping to find work. The men, all ethnic Rohingyas, told Indonesian officials they fled Burma on April 15 and were sailing to Malaysia. Storms sent them off course and washed them up Monday on Rondo Island, which lies just off the northern tip of Sumatra island.

Six die, 266 others hospitalized in Lombok malaria outbreak At least six people have died and 266 others have been treated at local hospitals and community health centers in East Lombok since a malaria outbreak was first detected in the regency at the end of October. The outbreak struck three subdistricts in the regency concentrating on the Ijobalit and Sekarwangi areas, with the six dead and 232 other people contracting the disease there. The 34 other cases were found in Pijot.

Volunteers say Tentena explosions kill 27 Local volunteers said that 27 were killed in the twin bomb explosions Saturday morning in a busy market in Central Sulawesi town of Tentena, according to reports on the website of Indonesia's English daily Jakarta Post. The number was based on the body counts at the Tentena General Hospital.

Indonesia warns of more terror attacks Indonesia's Security Minister says intelligence information points to the possibility of more terrorist acts taking place soon in Indonesia and his security officials are focusing on Ambon and Poso, where sectarian conflicts have spiralled out of controlled. Speaking at a news conference after an internal security meeting, Mr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono also said the new attacks are expected to be in a different form from the recent Bali bombings.
