Increased passenger numbers for Garuda Indonesia Garuda Indonesia – the Indonesian National flag carrier – reports a 23.96% increase in passengers carried in the first six months of 2013, totaling 11.9 million, as opposed to the 9.6 million flown January – June 2012. The CEO of Garuda, Emirsyah Satar, said the increase in passengers translated into a 14.1% increase in income achieving US$1.72 billion during the first half of 2013.

Flying Merpati Nusantara? Are you sure? Figures from ticketindonesia.info show that the airline with the most canceled flights in their name is Merpati Nusantara. This Indonesian state-owned company, also partially owned by Garuda Indonesia, seems to have a peculiar way of conducting business; selling tickets, canceling flights and then wait for months to pay back the money paid for tickets on those canceled flight. At least it seems that way.

Late arrival of Boeing 777-300 planes for Garuda The new Boeing 777-300 planes that were ordered by Garuda Indonesia (GIAA), will not be delivered to Garuda as scheduled. The planes were due to arrive late 2012 or at latest early 2013, but Boeing now says that is will not be able to comply to this. There is a backlog at the Boeing plant in Seattle in the United States. Garuda expects that two out of the total order of 10 will be delivered in 2013.

The TransJakarta Busway as wrong example With currently at least a dozen routes throughout many parts of Jakarta it is possible to travel around the city for just 3,500 Rupiah per person. It doesn't even matter how many transfers you make. The oldest routes have their own lanes through dense traffic conditions in many parts of the city, but elsewhere the big buses have to compete with a few million other road users.

Death toll rises to 191 in Merapi eruptions The death toll in Indonesia's Mount Merapi eruptions risen to 191 on Wednesday as international airlines again cancel and postpone routes to and from the region. Disaster management officials confirmed the number of deaths since Merapi began making strong eruptions late last month. In addition, over 340,000 people are currently staying in temporary camps.

Mount Sinabung erupts once more The Mount Sinabung volcano on the island of Sumatra erupted again on Tuesday, it is the strongest in the five eruptions in the last two weeks, shooting ashes 5,000 metres into the air, but there is no report of casualties. The eruption sent hot ash rain toward south-east of Mount Sinabung, located in Karo district of North Sumatra.

Five new destinations for Lion Air The subsidiary of Lion Air - Wings Air - has opened up five new routes to several smaller destinations in central Indonesia. The new flights are to the destinations of Kolaka, Maumere, Ende, Natuna and Malaka (Malaysia). These routes are all flown by brand new ATR 72-500 planes and are flown from Jakarta or Denpasar.

Garuda'sdesperate need for more pilots Bisnis.com reports that the national airline Garuda needs more than 600 pilots to meet its current shortfall in cockpit staff. The corporate secretary for Garuda's Pilot Association (APG), Josias Pontonuwu, said the need for more pilots is tied to the airlines new aircraft and new routes.

Garuda reports strong loads on new Amsterdam route Bisnis.com reports that three weeks into the re-launch of Garuda Indonesia's Jakarta-Amsterdam service load factors are running at 70%. The commercial director of Garuda, Agus Priyanto, predicts that load factors on the new European route will reach 80% in July.

Has Garuda lost the thread on heritage conservation? Garuda Indonesia is on a roll. The national carrier has returned to Europe with flights to Amsterdam; new aircraft are on order to make their already young fleet even younger; plans are in hand for more new routes, including resuming service to America's West Coast; the airline has re-established its safety certification with IATA and the EU; and, most importantly, the airline is turning a profit.

Body of grandpa retrieved from Bunderan HI pond The police in Central Jakarta has found a body of an elderly man in the pond of the monument on Bunderan HI. The body was found around half past eight in the morning by officers that were arranging the heavy rush hour traffic at the location. The body floated in the pond for hours at one of the most busy routes in downtown Jakarta.

Garuda to open 10 new routes in 2010 National News Agency Antara reports that Garuda Indonesia plans to open at least ten new domestic, regional and international routes in 2010, once 23 new airplanes join the national carrier's armada. Pujobroto, a spokesman for Garuda, told press in Bima on the island of Sumbawa, "following the realization of 18 new domestic routes this year, next year we will open 10 more routes."

More problems for Batavia Air in Surabaya Passengers waiting for their flights to Kupang and Jakarta with Batavia Air have been delayed for many hours. Most of them are still stranded at the international airport of Juanda near Surabaya. The plane in the direction of Kupang in East Nusa Tenggara, should have departed yesterday afternoon, but has not departed as of earlier this afternoon.

Garuda shopping for more aircraft The Jakarta Post reports that Garuda Indonesia has allocated US$100 million (70 million euro) for expenditure in 2010 as the first of five yearly installments that will increase the airline's present fleet from 67 to 116 aircraft. Garuda's finance director Eddy Purwanto told the press, "We plan to spend $100 million in capital expenditure in 2010 to buy more planes as well as to fulfill Garuda's other operational expenditure."

Batavia Air flies to Singapore from Jakarta and Semarang The Indonesian airline Batavia Air has announced that they will start with two new routes. They will fly direct daily between Jakarta and Singapore as well as Semarang in Central Java and Singapore. The flight between Semarang and Singapore is fairly remarkable, as national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia ceased operations on that same route.

Direct flights to Phuket from Medan and Jakarta with AirAsia Budget airliner AirAsia has opened up two new routes that link the Indonesian cities of Medan in North Sumatra and the capital city of Jakarta with the popular beach resort town of Phuket in Thailand. AirAsia is the first airline to fly direct flights between the locations, which will be flown by new Airbus A320 planes belonging to Thai AirAsia.

Some luxury with Batavia Air After flying with AirAsia resulted in a slight disappointment I tried to fly with Batavia Air more often. They also have a number of new planes and offer regular fares which are attractive enough to give it a try as well. Fares are not that much different than those of AirAsia, but AirAsia just knows how to play the pricing game better.

Busway in Bandung launched today Bandung is the next city to get some form of new public transport in the form of Trans Metro Bandung (TMB) rapid mass transport. After a long period of protests by other bus operators the new system will be put in use today. The head of the TMB operating company, Yadi Haryani, told that the mayor of Bandung already issued a decree on the official launch.

'Almost all roads fine for Idul Fitri holidays' The Department of Public Works (PU) has said that ten days before the first day of Idul Fitri, some 98 percent of the construction and renovation works on roads is finished. 3.6 million drug addicts in Indonesia The Badan Narkotika Nasional (BNN, National Narcotics Brigade) in Indonesia has said that the country currently has 3.6 million registered addicts of various kinds of narcotics. It is estimated that only some ten percent of the cases around drug abuse surfaces, which makes people believe that the problem is in fact far larger.

EU lifts travel ban for some Indonesian carriers The European Union (EU) has lifted its restriction on four Indonesian air carriers from entering its territory, Director of Air Transport of Indonesian Transport Ministry Herry Bakti quoted EU ambassador to Indonesia Julian Wilson as saying here on Tuesday. The four carriers are leading carrier Garuda Indonesia, Mandala Airlines, Airfast Indonesia and Prime Air, Bakti said. All of them have potential to open routes to Europe, according to the ministry.

Train tickets for 'ekonomi' intercity trains down eight percent PT Kereta Api - the state-owned railway company, has announced that starting today, prices for their 'ekonomi' class intercity trains will be lowered with some eight percent. "We have already put up information about the new prices at the stations which are serviced by our economy-class trains," said Akhmad Sujadi, the regional head of the First Operational Zone of the railway company.

Garuda expands regional route network Bisnis.com reports that Garuda Indonesia will open 18 new regional routes commencing January 16, 2009. Pujobroto, the Airline's Corporate Vice-President, depicted the opening of the new routes as part of Garuda's overall growth plan. "The development of the new routes will be supported by 14 new Boeing 737NG that will begin gradually arriving in mid-2009," explained the Garuda official.

Juanda, a beautiful new airport near Surabaya Several years ago I was there for the last time - at that time it was the first time as well - at the airport of Surabaya. A small building which was far too small for the number of passengers that had to be served from the airport there. A common problem at airports, especially in the western part of Indonesia where the airline industry has grown incredibly in recent years following the startup of a number of new routes flown by several different airlines.

Garuda set to receive new airplanes starting in 2009 Garuda Indonesia will be taking delivery of brand new Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft in May 2009. The Vice-President of Garuda, Pujobroto, said the new airplanes are the first delivery of 50 "new generation" B737-800s on order by the Indonesian national carrier from the Boeing factory in Seattle, Washington (U.S.A.).
