27 million people on the move on aging infrastructure The Ministry of Transportation has said that it expected that more than 27 million people will hit the roads to be with their families during the upcoming Idul Fitri period later this month. Jusman Syafii Djamal, Minister of Transport, told that it was expected that some 16.3 million people would take public transport and planes, while 11 million others would use private vehicles.

Five percent pay rise for civil servants and police The national budget for 2010, which is currently being talked about, makes room for an average of five percent pay rise for civil servants, members of the Indonesian army, the police and retirement payouts. 2010 will see 28 trillion Rupiah (2 billion euro) - or 21 percent - in extra funds to realize this. The funds are also planned to be used for the payout of a 13th month for salaries and retirement payouts.

But the 63-year-old shows up everyday in a freshly-pressed safari suit, does some retirement planning and is actually eager to welcome his imminent replacement, a village chief elected in a whole new way. "I'm relieved," he says, "that we'll finally be going back to a system that truly suits our community."
