Adam Air to continue expansion Adam Skyconnection Airlines said the Jan. 1 crash of one of its aircraft will not affect expansion plans as the Indonesian budget carrier will pursue adding 60 planes within five years and searching for a strategic investor. The airline also plans to lease 10 Boeing 737 planes this year, bringing its total fleet to 32, according to the company's president director, Adam Suherman, whose family owns the Jakarta- based carrier.

Aceh rebels disband armed wing A year after the tsunami destroyed their battlefield, Indonesia's Aceh rebels formally disbanded their armed wing on Tuesday, effectively ending their 30-year separatist insurgency. The move paves the way for the guerrilla group to transform itself into a political party expected to make a strong showing in elections in April.

Trials and travails of Indonesia's richest man Publicity-shy paper and plantation magnate Sukanto Tanoto is in Indonesia's national headlines after topping two high-profile lists. Forbes Asia last month listed the 56-year-old tycoon as the richest individual in Indonesia, with assets worth about US$2.8 billion (Rp25.2 trillion). In June, the self-made ethnic-Chinese tycoon also topped a list of state-owned Bank Mandiri's six biggest debtors.

Govt rejects rebel demand to take part in Aceh local elections The Indonesian government on Tuesday rejected a key demand by Aceh separatist rebels, to take part in future local elections in the tsunami-battered province. Indonesian laws barred the government from "accommodating" the Free Aceh Movement's (GAM) demands for local polls and the right to form a party, said the senior security minister, Widodo Adisucipto.

Indonesia to vaccinate five million children in polio scare Indonesia has launched a massive vaccination campaign expected to reach more than five million children after detecting its first case of polio in a decade. A 20-month-old girl was diagnosed with polio on April 21 and authorities believe she came in contact with a migrant worker or tourist who had contracted the disease while outside the country.

PLN: Java-Bali region prone to blackouts The country's main Java-Bali power grid will continue to run with thin reserves until April due to the lack of fresh power supply despite growing power demands, making the region vulnerable to rotating blackouts. Basuki Prajitno, general manager of power plants and load management of state-owned electricity firm PT PLN said demand for electricity had been picking up since early this year.

Rebel casualties in Aceh Indonesia's military today sent more paratroopers into Aceh in a massive offensive to destroy separatist rebels, while world leaders urged Jakarta to restart talks with the insurgents. Five rebels were killed and seven others captured yesterday during the first day of the assault, Lieutenant Colonel Achmad Yani Basuki said today.

Wahid trip to Aceh in doubt amid violence A trip by President Abdurrahman Wahid to Aceh province was in doubt on Thursday after fighting at an ExxonMobil gas field, which has been closed for security reasons threatening Indonesia's gas exports. Wahid's planned visit to Meulaboh, South Aceh, next week "might be cancelled," his spokesman Wimar Witoelar told journalists. Sources at the presidential palace said the military had strongly objected to the planned visit.
