Mount Merapi replanting movement launched People living on the slopes of Mount Merapi are being encouraged to replant as part of a government campaign to restore land badly damaged by recent eruptions. The campaign officially kicked off on Tuesday with Agriculture Minister Suswono planting banana trees in Batur village, Sleman, in Yogyakarta.

Farmers deal with huge losses after floods Thousands of hectares of rice paddies in fifteen sub-districts in the district of Bojonegoro, eastern Java, are destroyed or have rotten away because of flooding from the Bengawan Solo river. The area of rice paddies that has been completely destroyed is located in the sub-districts Purwosari, Kalitidu, Kapas and Truk. To prevent the losses from rising even further, a number of farmers decided to harvest the damaged crops any way.

Just at the time the administration of US President George W Bush is being urged by a group of leading US business executives and senior military officers to act decisively to break America’s dependence on oil and the EU is seeking alternative energy sources, Malaysia and Indonesia are seeking to create a an Opec-style cartel on one of the alternatives – palm oil, used for biofuels.

Govt mulls death penalty for illegal loggers Illegal loggers and corrupt officials who help them plunder vast tracts of virgin tropical forests may face the death penalty under a presidential decree to be issued next month, a senior an official said Monday. "These illegal loggers are environmental terrorists. They steal millions of dollars worth of revenue and destroy the environment," said Fachrir Fathoni, a senior official at the nature conservation directorate at the Forestry Ministry. "We are seriously considering the death penalty. We want to get the big players," he said.

Smoke haze from burning vegetation back in Indonesia Smoke haze from burning vegetation has returned to parts of the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo, and is starting to affect visibility. A meteorology official at Pekanbaru in central Sumatra said the haze had reduced morning and late afternoon visibility to between two and three kilometres compared to the normal level of above 10 kilometres.
