The need for good paperwork in Bali The Bali Post reports that the regional government of Gianyar and local enforcement officials have affixed a closure notice (segel) at the entrance to the Hanging Garden Luxury Resort & Spa located in Payangan, Ubud. The notice, which could effectively close the 38-villa property in two months, was posted on Thursday, March 10, 2011.

Bali shuts down for 'Day of Silence' The normally vibrant Indonesian tourist destination of Bali came to a standstill Friday as the island's Hindu majority celebrated the start of the Hindu new year. The Day of Silence, known here as Nyepi, saw Balinese confined to their homes, unable to work, play and - for some - even talk or eat.

Garuda complies with IATA safety standards On July 4, 2007, Tempo Interaktif reported Garuda Indonesia is in the process of renewing its certficaton for compliance with the strict safety standards of the International Aviation Transport Association (IATA). According to Tempo, the national airline has already met 95% of the standards of the International Aviation Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), scheduled to be carried out in August.

CPJ condemns government ban of critical radio station The Committee to Protect Journalists condemns the local Southeast Maluku government's order to shut down Radio Gelora Tavlul, a popular station in eastern Indonesia known for its criticism of the local government. Authorities accompanied by police entered the radio station in the remote city of Tual, capital of the Southeast Maluku regency, about 1,600 miles (2,575 kilometers) east of Jakarta, on Thursday and ordered it to stop broadcasting because its business license had expired.

More paramilitaries sent to troubled Ambon, toll rises to 38 Another 100 paramilitary police have been sent to the troubled Indonesian city of Ambon as the death toll from a week of violence between Christian separatists and Muslims rose to 38. An 18-year-old man shot in the head by a sniper on Wednesday died from his wounds overnight at the Al Fatah hospital, a doctor there said. Authorities had on Saturday said that 37 people had died in a renewal of clashes which killed 5,000 over three years until a pact was signed in February 2002.

Houses torn down for Cilandak mall South Jakarta public order officers bulldozed on Thursday three houses on Jl. T.B. Simatupang, Cilandak Barat, to make way for extensions to the Cilandak Town Square mall, despite an ongoing legal battle over the ownership of the land. Having lived there for 37 years, Soenarno, Handoyo and Jemry Simatupang refused to comply with an order issued by the municipality's housing agency on July 12, 2003, which gave them a deadline to vacate the land on Wednesday.

Aceh rebels warned for imminent strike Indonesia warned Aceh rebels meeting for last-ditch peace talks in Tokyo that they had to give up their fight for independence by Sunday or face an imminent military assault in the resource-rich province. Rattling off demands the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) is unlikely to accept, chief security minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the rebels also had to lay down 60 percent of their weapons this month if they wanted to save an ailing peace agreement.
