'Suramadu bridge causes increase of prostitution' While Batam is looking to legalize brothels, clerics in Bangkalan in Madura, East Java, have demanded prostitution be banned. Local clerics urged the provincial legislature on Friday for the passage of the draft ordinance banning prostitution and adultery.

Policeman fired after FPI raid A middle-ranking police officer here was removed from his post on Wednesday, a day after FPI (Muslim hard-liners) raided at least two local restaurants and destroyed hundreds of bottles of alcoholic beverages. The dismissal of Adj. Comr. Zaenal Arifin was for his failure to prevent the Muslim extremists from taking the law into their own hands, said a top Surakarta police officer. Zaenal is believed to be the first police officer in the country to receive such stiff punishment for failing to prevent an attack of this type during Ramadhan.

Eight FPI members arrested for carrying sharp weapons Eight members of the "Islam Defenders Front" (FPI) have been apprehended by West Jakarta police for carrying sharp weapons during a rally in front of the West Jakarta Police precinct on Tuesday. Some 150 FPI members were protesting the slow pace of investigations into a clash between their group and residents of the Kalijodo red-light district in West Jakarta last Sunday, in which four FPI members were injured.

8 police nabbed for harassment Eight officers from the East Jakarta Police were arrested for sexually harassing sex workers. City police spokesman Sr. Comr. Tjiptono said the incident occurred on July 25 when some 20 police officers were involved in a raid in the Boker red-light district in East Jakarta.

Indonesia's shameful export It is not something any government likes to make public, but the figures say it all: Indonesia is one of the world's largest exporters of sex workers, mainly children. The Unicef says as many as 70,000 Indonesian children have been sold across the country's borders as sex commodities. They are employed in countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore. Similarly, nearly half of the 400,000 estimated sex workers in Indonesia are children under 18 years old.

Soldiers, police clash in South Sulawesi A soldier and a policeman were wounded on Thursday in shoot-outs between troops and police in the town of Palopo, Luwu regency, South Sulawesi, officials and residents said. The clash erupted briefly near the Luwu Police station at around 9:30 a.m., and ended after Army commanders arrived at the scene. However, officials could not say who had started firing first, as the investigation was still underway.
