Waiting along the toll road It is half past ten in the evening and the DAMRI bus that left the Kampung Rambutan bus terminal around half past seven in the evening has stopped and is on the emergency lane of the toll road between Jakarta and Bandung. Just short of three hours of traveling in the direction of Cilacap and engine problems already forced us to stop. What the exact problem is, is not known. There are bottles of water and the driver and kenek (from the Dutch word 'knecht', helper) are looking for a solution.

A goodbye to the kampung After a day or four, which was a few days back by now, it was time to go back home to the 'civilized world', however that is a wrong choice of words if you ask me. My girlfriend and I decided that four days was enough, above all it was a 'mere' eight hours shaking by bus and 55.000 Rupiah to get here, so it was not something impossible if you want to go.

A trip by bus from Kampung Rambutan to Karangbawang At the end of a Sunday afternoon we left from Lippo Cikarang in the direction of Kampung Rambutan, a bus terminal at the edge of Jakarta. From here we would take the bus later today. We would take the one headed for Cilacap at the southern coast of Central Java to bring a visit to the family of my girlfriend. The trip to the bus terminal took about one hour, which was only a small leg in the entire trip.

There is the wet monsoon First some lightning and later with a rolling thunder from the south, a bunch of dark clouds heads towards the north. After two rainshowers yesterday afternoon it is very likely that it will rain again today. A clear sign that the wet monsoon finally will kick of. Somewhat late, but with half a year of virtually no rain at all, every single drop of rain is a gift from God for farmers and people with their own garden. Yesterdays rain was just a reminder of the arrival of the wet monsoon and also cleaned the streets from the dust that had been gathered in all possible and impossible places during the last six months.

Makeup led to woman's branding as prostitute Every humiliating moment of that day is etched in Lilies Lindawati's memory. She still smarts at the indignity of being branded a prostitute as she stood before a jeering crowd in a "show trial" for Tangerang's new prostitution bylaw. "I felt like I was being raped in front of those people who laughed at me after the judge ruled I was a prostitute, simply because the law and order officers found a makeup compact and a lipstick in my bag," a tearful Lilies told The Jakarta Post in her rented home in Tangerang.

Sutiyoso set on busway launch, ignores backseat drivers Despite the technical problems during the trial run last year, Governor Sutiyoso insists the new busway corridors will start limited operations on Jan. 15. But the buses driving the new routes may still be powered by diesel, rather than cleaner compressed natural gas (CNG). And the full quotient of buses won't come into service until April. "I don't see any significant obstacles (to the launch of the new busway project). We will go ahead with the plan to have our maiden ride on Jan. 15," Sutiyoso said at City Hall on Tuesday.

On my motorbike, enjoying the beauty of the Indonesian landscape preferrably outside the cities I see a lot of strange things. At least, they are strange in my western point of view. Some things make me wonder how they even got there.

Bus, railway stations crammed as holiday nears With just three full days before the kick off of Idul Fitri celebrations on Nov. 25, thousands of migrants living in Jakarta began to overstretch the limits of the airport, seaports, bus terminals and train stations, not to mention the main highways leading out of town to Central Java and East Java, as they rushed to get back to their hometowns in time for the holidays.

Kebayoran Baru, the first housing complex Living in Kebayoran Baru area remains just a dream for most Jakartans. The area not only offers luxurious housing but also hang out spots such as malls, hotels, cafes and the like. However, history has shown that Kebayoran Baru needed years before developing itself into an "attractive" neighborhood. In the 1950s, it was still an "unwanted" living area as it was located eight kilometers from the city center, considered quite far at the time. In addition, road access to the area was inadequate as the housing was built on a plantation.

Soeharto trial venue rocked The South Jakarta District Court is due to begin the long- awaited trial of former president Soeharto on Thursday amid more uncertainty following an explosion adjacent to the trial venue late on Wednesday night. A parked yellow Koantas Bima city bus was left mangled by the explosion. No casualties were reported and there was also little damage to surrounding buildings. The bus was parked in front of the Mitra Karya auto repair shop on Jl. Taman Marga Satwa, South Jakarta, about 300 meters across the street from the Ministry of Agriculture compound, where the trial will be held.
