Interest from government account stolen by officials The corruption watchdog KPK has ordered six banks in Java, Sumatra and Kalimantan to close accounts of provincial government officials that were receiving interest from savings accounts that belong to their local administrations. Haryono Umar, staff of the KPK said that the banks would bear incentives for government officials that parked government funds in savings accounts.

What Indonesia can learn from Thai military coup Politics in new democracies like Thailand has always sprung surprises. While Prime Minister Thaksin Sinawatra visited New York for the United Nations General Assembly, Thai army chief Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratglin led a bloodless coup and declared himself the temporary prime minister. It is interesting to observe that the coup did not spark social unrest, as if it were business as usual. On top of that, the tacit endorsement of revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej was a crucial factor behind the smooth process of the coup.

Cardig acquires Mandala Airlines from military Cargo transporter Cardig International has owned 100 percent of Indonesia's cash-strapped carrier Mandala Airlines under a purchase agreement earlier this month, an executive said Monday. Mandala president Diono Nurjadin told reporters here the negotiation began in September last year, several days after a Mandala plane crashed near an airport in the North Sumatra capital of Medan, killing 149 passengers and people on the ground.

Howard praises hospitals care for Bali victims Prime Minister John Howard has praised staff at hospitals around the country for their tireless efforts to treat victims of the Bali bombings. The Royal Darwin Hospital has been singled out for its frontline contribution over the past two days. The hospital says its operations are now starting to return to normal with just six victims of the Bali attacks remaining, two of those in intensive care.

Megawati: Military needs more money Indonesia's President Megawati Sukarnoputri said on Saturday the military needs more money to carry out its duties and protect the nation's vast and porous borders but the government's ability to help out was limited. Speaking at the 57th anniversary of the armed forces and wearing a military-style jacket complete with insignia, Megawati said years of economic crisis had left the government unable to support the police and military, forcing them to make their own money.
