Kalla lists three causes of LPG explosions Former vice president Jusuf Kalla wrote on his blog at kompasiana.com that there are three main factors that cause 3-kilogram liquid petroleum gas (LPG) canisters to explode. "First, is because the poor quality equipment does not meet national standards. Therefore, it is necessary for all parties to be aware of the age of their equipment," he said Wednesday.

The government hopes the 1.6 million hectare Merauke Integrated Food and Energy Estate in Merauke District will turn Indonesia into one of the world's biggest food producers.

Unilever and Nestle ban palmoil giant Sinar Mas After Unilever, Nestle also decided to ban Indonesian palmoil giant Sinar Mas as a supplier for their factories. The world's biggest food producer has done this after pressure from environmental organisations like Greenpeace, which accuse Sinar Mas of destroying the Indonesian rain forests.

Indonesia and The Netherlands working together on CO2-problem The Netherlands is about to participate in four projects in Indonesia in order to reduce it's production of CO2 gas. One project will use natural gas while three other projects will be aimed at retrieving gas from trash that can be used as energy.

1.74 tons of marijuana seized by Sukabumi police The regional police of Sukabumi has seized some 1.74 tons of dried marijuana when it raided a house in the city of Sukabumi last Friday. The raid was a joint operation between the National Narcotics Brigade and the police in the region. The total value of the drugs is estimated at 6 billion Rupiah (410.000 euro). The drugs were already prepared for distribution. Four suspects were arrested during the raid.

PLN wants to raise price of power by 30% The state-owned power company PLN will propose to hike rates up to 30 percent for households and industries in the country to make the company profitable again. The proposal however was soon shot down by senior business representatives that said that such an increase would hurt economical growth.

Minister: 'development of culture and tourism on right track' Indonesia's culture and tourism are developing well despite of the world's financial crisis that wrecked many countries, the Jakarta Post quoted a minister as saying on Thursday. Minister for Culture and Tourism Jero Wacik said that Indonesia's movie and music industry grew significantly compared with the previous year while tourist arrivals was expected to keep growing this year.

Destroying imported food part of strict import policy The Bali branch of the Agency for the Supervision of Food and Drugs (BPOM) has conducted on-site destruction of imported food items at several locations around Bali. On Friday, July 10, 2009, a total of 277 different products were crushed and burned in the parking lot of the Bali Deli. The items, not included on the BPOM's list of approved imports included products from Portugal, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, South Korea, U.S.A. and China.

Police raids drug-factory in luxury Bogor villa A luxury villa in Kampung Pasir Putih in Bogor, West Java, has been raided by the regional and local police of Bogor earlier today. The villa was used as a factory for the production of synthetic drugs and is said to be the biggest factory in Bogor. At the moment of the raid the police was able to seize amounts of chemicals and production equipment.

Ecstasy factory found in North Jakarta appartment The anti-drugs unit from the Jakarta police succeeded in breaking down an ecstasy factory in an apartment in the Gading Mediterania complex in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. Three people were arrested in the apartment. Police also found evidence in the form of 17 kilo's of marijuana (worth 1.1 million euro), 31.000 tablets of ecstasy (worth 390.000 euro) , chemicals and equipment to make the drugs.

Indonesia's Freeport to look for efficiency as copper price falls PT Freeport Indonesia, a unit of Freeport McMoran Copper and Gold Inc., said on Wednesday that it will look for efficiency and was to delay exploration projects, following lower world copper prices. But spokesman of the company Mindo Pangaribuan said that the firm, which has cut 75 jobs at its Jakarta office recently, was still optimistic that the prices could recover in coming months.

Indonesia gives exploration rights on 22 oil fields Indonesia has awarded rights for exploration on 22 oil-and-gas blocks to energy companies, including ConocoPhilips, Chevron and Husky Energy, a director at the energy ministry said here Friday. "22 blocks have been awarded to foreign and local companies," Evita Legowo, director at the ministry told on telephone. The director said that a U.S. unit from Chevron got a right to look for oil on onshore and offshore oil and gas blocks of West Papua I and West Papua II.

At least 20 oil, gas basins found in Eastern Indonesia At least 20 new basins of oil and gas were found, mostly located in eastern part of Indonesia. The country now has 87 basins in with 67 of them on a map previously released in 1985, according to local media on Thursday. Geological experts have discovered at least 20 new basins which are similar in size as those listed in the previous maps, the Indonesian Business daily quoted secretary general of Indonesian geologist (IAGI) Ridwan Djamaludin as saying.

Minister: 'Nuclear power plant to be built in Banten' The Minister of Research and Technology, Kusmayanto Kadiman, has said that the government is planning on building a nuclear power plant on the northern shore of Banten province. Kadiman said that the power plant was to be constructed between 2015 and 2020 and should have a capacity of 1.000 Megawatt. The total cost of the project is some two billion euro.
