A third of Borneo to be conserved, new declaration passed An historic declaration to conserve the "Heart of Borneo" was officially signed today between the three Bornean governments - Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia. The tri-country declaration will conserve and sustainably manage one of the most important centers of biological diversity in the world. The Heart of Borneo is an area of equatorial rainforest larger than Kansas, covering nearly a third of the island.

The Tengger of Bromo: Magic, mystique and modernism Legend has it that the Tengger ethnic group in the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru area of East Java is descended from the ancient Majapahit royal family. The name "Tengger" itself is said to be an acronymic derivation of two legendary figures from the region, Rara Anteng and Jaka Seger. As it has been long told, during a time of chaos for the Majapahit kingdom, Princess Rara Anteng took refuge in the area around Mount Bromo. While she was being evacuated, Rara Anteng met Jaka Seger, the son of a priest from the kingdom of Kediri, which was also in great turmoil. Their meeting was the beginning of a love story, and the area was later christened after their combined names.

Solutions sought for decline in orangutan population The government says a comprehensive assessment process is underway on the plight of the orangutan due to mass deforestation, but it will avoid scaring off foreign investors. Minister of Forestry Malam Sambat Kaban said over the weekend that his office was in talks with other authorities and the government of Malaysia on the decreasing number of orangutans -- Asia's only great ape -- which are only found in Kalimantan, parts of Malaysia and Brunei, and in Sumatra.

The widespread use of sodium cyanide and explosives in fishing has caused massive damage to coral reefs in South Sulawesi over the past decade, local environmentalists say. "Some studies show that about 70 percent of coral reefs in the Spermonde islands and on the west coast of South Sulawesi are seriously damaged because fishing activities in these areas ignore the environmental aspect", said Willem Moka, of the Maritime Biology and Research Center for Coral Reefs at Hasanuddin University.

Prambanan lures rare birds Hardly spotted in its natural habitat now, some rare gelatik (Java sparrows) have picked an unusual site, the beautiful Prambanan temple, as their last resort in search of a permanent home. Situated on the border of Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces, the birds can be spotted flying around and on top of this 1145-year-old Hindu temple. Visitors can also see the birds resting in corners of the temple before flying off to the nearby rice fields.
