Indonesia to launch counter-terrorist exercise in Malacca Strait Indonesia will establish a counter-terrorist exercise on December 19-22 in the Malacca Strait as a part of the army-police joint exercise in overcoming terrorist threats on land, air and in the sea, the national Antara News Agency reported on Friday. Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Widodo AS said that the exercise to be done in the Malacca Strait was a form of care Indonesia would show as a littoral country on the security of the world's busiest waterway.

Microsoft amnesty for Indonesia Microsoft is to grant Indonesia an amnesty on pirated versions of Windows used on government computers in exchange for a token payment, a report says. Under the deal, up to 50,000 computers running illegal software would be legalised at a dollar each, Information Minister Sofyan Djalil was quoted as saying in the Jakarta Post daily today.

Police seek suspects in local porn film Police in the West Java capital of Bandung are searching for the makers and stars of a pornographic film called ‘Bulan Madu’ (Honeymoon) that was apparently filmed in a hotel in the city. The film, shot with a camcorder and now being sold for up to Rp75,000 a copy on video compact disc (VCD) format, runs for 45 minutes and 7 seconds. Also being sold under the title ‘Bandung Lautan Asmara II’ (Bandung Love Ocean II), the film shows a young man and young woman having sex in various positions in a room - reportedly at the Greenhill Hotel.

Vendors ready for enactment of Copyright Law With Law No. 19/2002 on the protection of copyrights going into effect on July 29, Jakartans will likely have a more difficult time purchasing counterfeit goods over the next month as vendors close up shop to avoid raids. Most of the vendors in the Mangga Dua shopping complex, center for pirated goods in the capital, closed their stalls early on Monday. "We heard that there will be a raid by the police soon," one vendor said.

Tension high in Glodok area Tension was high in the Glodok area in Kota, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, after Taman Sari Public Order Officers demolished VCD vendors' stands along the road during a raid on the vendors on Wednesday night. On Thursday morning vendors gathered in front of the Glodok Electronics Mall to retaliate against the officers, but police personnel from Taman Sari Police subprecinct managed to subdue them.

Sutiyoso: Glodok street vendors to be moved The city administration has announced it will relocate the some 400 roadside vendors, most of whom sell pirated VCDs and small electronic goods, operating around the busy Glodok shopping center in West Jakarta beginning next year. Governor Sutiyoso, who visited the popular electronics center on Friday, said the street vendors would be relocated to a four-story market in nearby Perniagaan, which is currently under renovation.

Security guards protect footbridge near Le Meridien Anyone using the footbridge in front of the Le Meridien hotelon Jl. Sudirman in Central Jakarta will notice the presence of several security guards, each equipped with a combat knife and stick, standing by the bridge. At a glance, people might think that the guards, who wear light blue uniforms, gray berets and an armband that reads Polda Metro Jaya (Jakarta Police), are policemen. But they are actually employed by a private security company hired by thehotel management to watch the bridge.

Glodok are shakes off the gloom once again Business activities at Harco Glodok electronics center in West Jakarta stated to show signs of life on Tuesday amid fears of further rioting in the predominantly ethnic-Chinese business district. Several stores opened their doors to customers under the watchful eyes of dozens of uniformed police officers, while others whose stores were burned or vandalized by mobs during rioting on Saturday were still busy cleaning up the mess.

Police shift blame for Glodok raid Top police officers blamed each other on Sunday for the botched raid on sellers of illegal Video Compact Discs (VCDs) in Glodok on Saturday which triggered widespread rioting in the West Jakarta commercial district. "The National Police Headquarters did not inform the city police about the planned VCD raid. Our operational and control forces were taken by surprise, when they heard about the raid," Jakarta Police chief Maj. Gen. Nurfaizi said after a coordination meeting with the capital's five precinct chiefs at city police headquarters.

Glodok erupts after raids on pirated VCDs Rioting broke out in the capital's predominantly ethnic- Chinese business district of Glodok on Saturday morning after police raided street vendors selling pirated video compact discs (VCDs). At least four shops in the Harco Glodok electronic goods shopping center and several others along with two automobile showrooms on nearby Jl. Gajah Mada and Jl. Hayam Wuruk were set alight and vandalized. Looting was also reported from some of the shops affected.
