Aviastar Twin Otter skids over runway in Papua A Twin Otter plane from the airline Aviastar skidded over the runway of Serui airport in Papua when it tried to land at around 10:00 local time (GMT+9) this morning. The three crew members and five passengers were not injured in the incident however. According to Iman Setiawan of the local police, the incident happened when the plane tried to land. Only two pilots in simulator, training a success The first reaction from Indonesia on the ban to fly to countries of the European Union for all Indonesian airliners was as clear as it could be. Furious they were, because there were no structural problems at all in the airline industry in the country. President Yudhoyono even canceled a visit to the Netherlands because of the ban. And all this even when there was not a single Indonesian airliner flying to Europe, since Garuda Indonesia had stopped flying to Amsterdam late 2004 already.

Merpati Twin Otter localized in Papua mountains The Merpati Nusantara Twin Otter plane that went missing in the Papua region of Indonesia has been localized. The plane has been found in the Ampisibil area in the district of Pegunungan Bintang. The plane went missing two days ago. Commander of the Search and Rescue team in Jayapura, Suandi Miharja, said that the plane was found at 06:30 local time by pilot Erik Doglas when he was looking for the plane from the sky.

Falling wheels new chapter in Indonesian air safety Where it used to be falling planes that scared Indonesians, Indonesian skies are much safer these days. Yesterday afternoon a plane belonging to Merpati Nusantara with flight number MZ 761 on the route Jayapura - Biak - Makassar - Jakarta only lost one tire when departing from Biak Airport in the province of Papua. One of the left wheels of the plane which was flown by pilot Haryogi and co-pilot Eko Laksono, fell off shortly after taking of for Makassar.

Lion Air MD90 skids of runway on Lombok airport An MD90 plane with flight number GT 652 which belongs to Lion Air skidded off the runway at the Selaparang airport on the island of Lombok. The plane had just arrived from Jakarta when it skidded over the runway. Based on information the pilot should have turned the plane at the end of runway 09, but did this earlier on the runway. The airport was closed for 3.5 hours and two other flights had to wait for their departure.

Indonesia confirms first two cases of Mexican Flu Officials confirmed Wednesday the country's first cases of the H1N1 flu after an Indonesian and a British tourist tested positive for the virus. Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari identified an Indonesian pilot who recently flew to Australia and Hong Kong, and a 22-year-old British tourist who has lived in Australia.

Two soldiers die in another helicopter crash An Air Force Puma helicopter crashed at the Atang Sendjaya airbase in Bogor, West Java, on Friday killing two and injuring five of the seven servicemen it was carrying, an Air Force spokesman said. The helicopter crashed at about 14:15 local time during a test flight, Indonesian Air Force spokesman Commodore Bambang Soelistyo said here Friday.

The third victim, co-pilot Yuli Sasongko, died on the way from the general hospital of Cianjur to the general hospital of Bogor, where the heavily injured patient could be treated better.

11 feared dead in Papua plane crash A reported 11 people were feared dead in the crash of a small chartered plane Friday in remote eastern Indonesia, police said. Rescue teams said they would be unable to search for the wreckage until Saturday because of bad weather in the isolated Mount Gergaji area near Mimika in the Papua province. Officials told they still were getting a signal from the plane, which was reported chartered by the local government.

Garuda pilot sentenced to two years in jail over accident An Indonesian court on Monday sentenced a pilot from the country's national airline Garuda to two years in jail for crashing a passenger jet in 2007 in the central Javan city of Yogyakarta, killing 21 people. The court found M. Marwoto Komar guilty of criminal negligence.

Indonesia frees Australians jailed in Papua Indonesia has freed five Australians who were jailed for illegally entering Papua after a higher court ruled that they had not breached immigration rules, their lawyer said on Tuesday. The five, who said that they were tourists, landed in Merauke, in the Indonesian half of the island of New Guinea, in September 2008 without a flight permit or visas.

Lion Air MD-90 in Batam landing incident A Lion Air Boeing MD-90 late yesterday landed at Batam airport without its front landing gear extended, resulting in damage to the undercarriage and the airport having to be closed. The Indonesian airline's general director, Edward Sirait, says the MD-90, local registration PK-LIO, was on a domestic flight from Medan to Batam when the crew discovered the aircraft's front landing gear was unable to be deployed.

Juanda, a beautiful new airport near Surabaya Several years ago I was there for the last time - at that time it was the first time as well - at the airport of Surabaya. A small building which was far too small for the number of passengers that had to be served from the airport there. A common problem at airports, especially in the western part of Indonesia where the airline industry has grown incredibly in recent years following the startup of a number of new routes flown by several different airlines.

Indonesia still on airline blacklist from EU The European Commission added the west African state of Gabon to its airline safety blacklist on Thursday and maintained a ban on all Indonesian airlines flying to the European Union in the latest update. Safety experts from all 27 EU states called for the Indonesian ban to be upheld after meetings with airlines Garuda, Mandala and Air Fast and with local aviation authorities.

Indonesia pilot goes on trial for 'crashing plane' An Indonesian pilot has gone on trial accused of deliberately causing a deadly airliner crash, the first time a pilot has been charged over an aviation disaster in the country. Marwoto Komar, who faces a life sentence if he is convicted, said nothing as his trial began in the central Javanese city of Yogyakarta on Thursday. Indonesian courts do not require the accused to make a formal plea.

Former intelligence official arrested over Munir case The former deputy head of Indonesia's top intelligence body has been arrested, for alleged involvement in the murder of a prominent human rights activist four years ago. Muchdi Purwo-prandjono was arrested as a key suspect in the murder of Munir, the co-founder of Imparsial and Kontras, two groups critical of the military and its methods of quashing dissent and separatism.

Air Asia plane makes emergency landing at Palembang airport A plane that is owned by Air Asia, with flight number QZ 7661, has made an emergency landing at the airport of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II in Palembang, on Sumatra island. The emergency landing was made around 17:30 local time on Tuesday. The Boeing 737-300 with 99 passengers and crew on board was traveling from Jakarta to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) when they had to make an emergency landing because of a broken window.

Former Indonesian airline boss jailed in Munir case The former executive director of Indonesia's national airline Garuda, Indra Setiawan, has been sentenced by a Jakarta court to one year in jail for assisting in the killing of the human rights activist Munir Said Thailib. One killed as military aircraft crashes in Indonesia An Indonesian air force jet crashed into a sugar cane field shortly after take-off earlier on Monday, killing one of two people on board, according to a military spokesman and witnesses at the scene of the crash. The second pilot in the OV-10 Bronco counterinsurgency aircraft ejected himself from the plane before it crashed and was not injured, said Rear Marchal Daryatmo.

They say poor working conditions and low salaries are the cause, according to the head of the airline's union. Garuda plane returns to airport after 'buzzing sound' heard A Garuda Indonesia plane with almost 250 passengers aboard returned to the airport of Surabaya shortly after take-off because the pilot heard a "buzzing noise", according to a report. The plane had departed from the airport just 15 minutes earlier and was heading for Singapore when the pilot decided to turn around, as was told by a company official. "The pilot decided to return back as the buzzing noise disrupted his concentration," said Sudjoko Dalijo, a Garuda manager in Surabaya.
