Condom drive sparks protests by conservative Muslims A campaign to encourage Indonesians to use condoms as part of national HIV/AIDS prevention efforts has drawn criticism from conservative Islamic groups, who say it promotes promiscuity. "Rather than curbing AIDS, promoting condoms will only further spread the disease," Ismail Yusanto, a spokesman for Hizbut Tahrir, a conservative Islamic group.

Promoting use of condoms difficult in Indonesia After she made a commercial to promote a brand of condoms, Julia Perez has now become an official ambassador of the condom brand Sutra during the National Condom Week that was launched in Jakarta a few days ago. Java quake survivors told to be patient Survivors of an earthquake in Indonesia which killed over 6,000 people attended weekly prayers at a damaged mosque on Friday, where a preacher called for patience in waiting for desperately-needed aid. The United Nations said it was in the process of removing bottlenecks in the supply of water, food and material to the victims of Saturday's magnitude 6.3 quake and announced plans for a six-month $103 million relief programme.

It's the road from nowhere, but it's surprisingly busy. Mafalda Florindo and Isabella Antonine walk along it, smiling betel-stained grins as they talk about cloth they had just bought for a good price. A little farther, Alicin Soares, a rice grower, maneuvers his truck along the dusty track. His vehicle is filled with people, some of them smoking, and five jerricans of gasoline. Later Antonio Serrano arrives in a van filled with Coke and Fanta, 50 cases in all, to be sold at a tidy profit of $1 a case. He does the trip every day.
