Indonesia's per capita income up 24% in 2008 Indonesia's per capita income rose 24 per cent to US$2,271 in 2008 from US$1,942 in 2007 with Gross Domestic Product at Rp4,954 trillion (US$450 billion) based on current prices. Last year, the country's GDP based on constant prices of 2000 reached Rp2,082.1 trillion, head of the central bureau of Statistics Rusman Heriawan said.

Indofood wants to produce more noodles The largest instant noodle maker in the world, Indonesian Indofood (PT Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk), plans to expand it's capacity from 13.5 billion packs per year to 14.5 billion to meet growing demand, as was told by a senior executive of the company on Tuesday. Thomas Tjhie, a director of Indofood, said the company was to spend 1.6 trillion Rupiah (132.2 million euro) this year, with 80 percent to be used for expansion.

It would be among the five biggest economic powers in the world by 2030. That is if all components were cooperating in the management of natural resources and problems facing the nation were properly settled. "With the high potentials of our human resources and natural resources, we could realize the nation's dream of becoming a great nation if we could manage all these things very well," he told when he spoke at the Indonesia Forum Foundation in Jakarta on Friday.

Heineken to brew beer in Indonesia Dutch brewer Heineken plans to start producing beer in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, in a bid to tap the premium segment of the market, its local partner said on Thursday. Indonesia, where beer consumption has been hit by weak purchasing power and fewer foreign tourists due to a string of terror attacks, has a per capita consumption of 0.6 litres a year - the size of one standard local Heineken bottle - lower than Malaysia's 10 litres and China's 18 litres.

Local phone rates to rise by up to 28% Independent experts criticized on Wednesday the government's decision to allow the country's fixed-line operators to raise local telephone rates by up to 28 percent. Sudaryatmo of the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) said "the government is not sensitive enough to realize that the phone rates hike will simply be another burden on the public." "The government should first carry out a study into the public's capability to pay the higher rates in relation to their incomes, before allowing the phone rate hike," he told The Jakarta Post.

Suharto tops world corruption league Former dictator Suharto has topped a list of the world's most corrupt politicians over the past two decades. The list is part of Transparency International's new Global Corruption Report 2004, which charts the flow of stolen assets, recommends ways to recover money looted by despots, and sets out new standards on political finance and favors. Transparency International says Suharto stole about $15 billion to $35 billion during his 32 years of rule in a country where the Gross Domestic Product per capita hovers at around $700.

Indonesia becomes the puffer's paradise Indonesia has reaffirmed its status as a cigarette manufacturer's and puffer's paradise. Early last month, the Finance Ministry announced a freeze on excise tax hikes on cigarettes for this year in an effort to encourage local cigarette manufacturers to boost their annual production to 200 billion sticks, about 1,000 cigarettes per capita. The policy decision flies in the face of international norms; most governments nowadays urge their populations to smoke less to avoid cigarette-related diseases and unnecessary deaths.

Indonesia faces up to post-IMF reality After five years under the harsh tutelage of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy, is to break free from the IMF's bailout program and loan lifeline at the end of this year when its US$5 billion line of credit expires. A government committee has drafted an economic blueprint, a White Paper for post-IMF Indonesia that will be revealed on Friday, simultaneously with the draft budget for 2004, by President Megawati Sukarnoputri.

It's the road from nowhere, but it's surprisingly busy. Mafalda Florindo and Isabella Antonine walk along it, smiling betel-stained grins as they talk about cloth they had just bought for a good price. A little farther, Alicin Soares, a rice grower, maneuvers his truck along the dusty track. His vehicle is filled with people, some of them smoking, and five jerricans of gasoline. Later Antonio Serrano arrives in a van filled with Coke and Fanta, 50 cases in all, to be sold at a tidy profit of $1 a case. He does the trip every day.
