Commission shows film on discriminatory bylaws The National Commission on Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan) premiered on Wednesday a documentary movie on regional ordinances which it said discriminated against women. Titled "Atas Nama" (In the name of), the movie features testimonies of people who fall victims to the bylaws, including the family of a woman who was detained for allegedly practicing prostitution in Tangerang, Banten, followers of the Ahmadiyah Islamic sect, and women in Aceh.

'Suramadu bridge causes increase of prostitution' While Batam is looking to legalize brothels, clerics in Bangkalan in Madura, East Java, have demanded prostitution be banned. Local clerics urged the provincial legislature on Friday for the passage of the draft ordinance banning prostitution and adultery.

People in Jakarta banned from giving money to beggars People who donate money to beggars, street musicians or food vendors in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, will face jail time or hefty fines under new legislation passed Monday, according to an official. The city council says they aim to clean up Jakarta. Residents who buy food or goods from hawkers operating outside the designated locations, give money to beggars, newspaper sellers or solicit for sex on the street could spend 60 days in jail or be fined up to 1,800 euro tells Arie Budhiman, a spokesman for the city.

Aceh 'hand-severance' ordinance still being processed The provincial administration of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) is still processing a draft ordinance (Qanun) on theft - this particular one is popularly known as the 'hand-severance qanun'. In order to make it more acceptable from the human rights point of view, the provincial sharia official said. "The draft hand-severance qanun is now still in the making. We are also waiting for more inputs from the public on its substance," Al Yasa Abubakar, head of the provincial administration's Islamic Sharia Service, said on Saturday.

Indonesia: '100 percent ownership for private sector' Indonesian Transportation Minister Hatta Rajasa assured investors Wednesday that private firms -- both local and foreign -- would still be allowed to own up to 100 percent of infrastructure projects despite the upcoming amendment of the existing transportation legislation. "I can assure you that there will be no change to the 100 percent private-sector ownership principle in transportation-sector projects," Hatta told the press yesterday (Nov 1) after addressing a discussion held in conjunction with the "Indonesia Infrastructure Conference and Exhibition 2006".

Gays demand Indonesia revoke local ordinances inspired by Islam Gay and lesbian groups were demanding that the Indonesian government revoke local ordinances inspired by Islamic law that they claim violate their human and constitutional rights, a news report said Tuesday. The Association of Jakarta Transvestites; Arus Pelangi, a gay advocacy group; and the Srikandi Foundation, a women's advocacy group, appealed to the Justice and Human Rights Ministry to immediately strike down the ordinances, The Jakarta Post reported.

Green issues at forefront of revisions to Jakarta spatial plan The Sutiyoso administration plans to revise the Jakarta Spatial Plan to improve the quality of life in the city and respond to environmental factors. "The revision is aimed at preventing further environmental destruction. Governor Sutiyoso himself wants the revision to come into effect in 2007," Jakarta Environmental Management Board (BPLHD) secretary Junani Kartawiria told a public discussion held by the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) on Thursday.

Stop abusive forced evictions of urban poor in Jakarta The Jakarta regional government has been forcibly evicting tens of thousands of the capital's urban poor from their homes, often leaving them homeless and destitute, Human Rights Watch said in a new report released today. The 115-page report, "Condemned Communities: Forced Evictions in Jakarta," describes the government's excessive use of force to clear out urban slums.
