Murderer of street kids gets death The Jakarta High Court has sentenced 49-year-old Baekuni, alias Babe, to death for sodomy and the premeditated murder of four street children. The verdict was higher than that of the East Jakarta District Court, which sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Tommy Suharto sues Garuda over 'convicted murderer' Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra, the son of deceased dictator Suharto, is suing state-owned airline Garuda Indonesia and the publishers of its in-flight magazine for referring to him as a “convicted murderer” in an article about one of his resorts. The civil hearing kicked off in the South Jakarta District Court on Tuesday.

20 year jail term for rape and murder of Japanese tourist A judge on Bali has sentenced the 26-year-old David Goltar Wicaksono to 20 years in prison for the rape and murder of the 33-year old Rikasano, a Japanese tourist. The perpetrator, from Malang in East Java, was arrested late last year as a suspect in the case and was indeed found to be guilty now.

Protestant clergyman and wife killed with machetes Police found Rev Frans Koagow, 64, and his wife Femy Kumendong, 73, at their home, dead, killed with machetes. The couple lived in Manado, capital of North Sulawesi province, where a majority of Sulawesi Island Christians live. Most local Christians are Protestant.

Three convicted murderers executed in Indonesia Three convicted murderers have been executed in Indonesia after spending nearly 20 years on death row. An 59-year-old mother and her 43-year-old son who murdered five people for revenge and a self-described shaman who killed eight were executed by firing squad overnight, an official said Saturday. Sumiarsih and her son Sugeng, were shot at shortly after midnight near Surabaya city in eastern Java.

From his grief-gouged eyes to the way he presses his hands together to stop them from shaking, it's clear that if Syamsudin Noor makes it through the next few weeks, he is still a dead man inside. Syamsudin has pushed through a crowd of fellow refugees to tell his story, describing in patient detail how a visitation of almost unimaginable brutality destroyed his remote village of Sangai in Indonesia's Kalimantan province. "All my children, my grandchildren were killed," he mourns. "They cut off their heads and then cut them up and took them away to eat. There were a lot of Madurese in Sangai. Now 95% of us are dead."

Police search for Tommy focuses on Jakarta, Surabaya The National Police's two-month search for fugitive Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra is now being focused on Jakarta and the East Java capital of Surabaya. "I repeat, the National Police has never arrested Tommy to date. Our sources indicate that Tommy is either in Surabaya or Jakarta," National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Saleh Saaf told reporters on Tuesday.

Truce takes effect in Aceh despite murder of rebel leader The three-month long truce between the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) separatist rebels officially took effect on Friday, despite the murder of rebel leader Teuku Don Zulfahri in Malaysia on Thursday. Security in the strife-torn province was generally good for the landmark day although rain poured on the capital city of Banda Aceh. There were a few incidents of locals hoisting the GAM flag in the area, but no clashes were reported.
