Towards the danger? About one and a half year ago I moved out from Yogyakarta, where I stayed for three years. Those three years started two months after the destructive earthquake which was directly followed by a small eruption of the Mount Merapi volcano directly north of where I lived then - Jakal KM 5, as it is locally known best.

No shortage of stupid cops Not the first time and most likely also not the last time that I was 'aught in a 'trap' when on the road. This means that all motorcyclists are stopped by police to check their paperwork. Drivers of motorcycles should always bring a valid STNK ('license plate registration') and SIM C ('driving license for motorcycles') with them.

Floods in Jakarta after heavy rainstorms Heavy rainstorms have hit the greater Jakarta area overnight. Rain started to fall down from around 20.00 local time yesterday evening and did not stop until the early hours of today. Rain of this intensity and length is rare, since it is in the middle of the dry season in the area. The heavy rains caused some streets to flood immediately.

Police looking for haram money before Ramadan It happens every year. In the run up to the holy month of fasting Ramadan, a part of the Indonesian police force is panicked slightly. They have to pay for their mudik (a trip back to their home town) at the end of the period of fasting and will have less work during the month itself because millions of people go home as well and public life changes drastically.

Pertamina cuts supply for quota State oil and gas firm PT Pertamina has reduced premium gasoline supply in trial periods in major cities, including Jakarta and Surabaya, and is monitoring the public reaction and response to the move before its full implementation. Head of Pertamina's fuel division Achmad Faisal said the plan was aimed at putting national fuel consumption on a par with the quota set by the government.
