Jokowi moves to ban topeng monyet shows The city administration wants to clear the long-tailed monkeys used in the popular roadside topeng monyet (masked monkey) shows off the capital's streets, in a bid to protect the monkeys, which inhabit Jakarta's northern coast, beritajakarta.com reported over the weekend.

Rabies cases growing in Bengkulu Bengkulu recorded growing number of cases of rabies, the city agriculture and animal husbandry office said. So far this year, 10 people were bitten by dogs and cats positively infected with the disease, Head of the Bengkulu Farm and Animal Husbandry Office Arif Gunadi said here Friday.

Rats probably spread rabies on Bali as well The latest and what may prove to be the 13th death attributed to rabies in Bali, since the disease surfaced in 2009, took the life of a 46 year-old Balinese woman, Ni Nyoman Koming, of Tabanan on Thursday, January 14, 2010. Admitted to the Tabanan Hospital with symptoms suggesting rabies, the patient and her family insisted she had not suffered a dog or domestic animal bite, but had been bitten by a rat two months earlier.

WWF catches Sumatran tiger family on tape A hidden camera from the WWF in Indonesia has captured a female tiger and two of it's cubs in the jungle in central Sumatra. This is the first tiger family that has been recorded by a camera belonging to the WWF. Four cameras were placed in the Rimbang Baling conservatory forest and the Bukit Tigapuluh National Park, located in Riau and Jambi.

Endangered monkeys found in Kalimantan About 60 so-called bekantan monkey (nasalis larvatus) were found living in a group in an undamaged forest. Researchers from the South Kalimantan devision of the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), found them. The finding of these endangered bekantan monkey just last month was unexpected as the albino mammal has been threatened with extinction according to Siswoyo, chairman of the BKSDA there.

Merapi residents get ready to flee People living on the slopes of smoldering Mt. Merapi in Central Java are getting ready to evacuate if the time comes. In Hargobonangun village in Pakem district near Yogyakarta, residents have put 110 vehicles on standby for evacuation purposes if the volcano erupts. "Though we have received no assistance from the Sleman regency administration or Yogyakarta province, we have taken a number of steps to prepare ourselves for an eruption," the head of Hargobonangun village, Mulyono, said.

She watched keenly as a carpenter hammered a wood plank less than five feet away. Another sawed a board in two, freeing the sweet fragrance of forest hardwood. Her new home was taking shape before her, and she dared not leave. "Someone else might take it," the doleful, wide-eyed woman said from the Red Cross tent erected on the concrete foundation of her former home, which was destroyed by the Dec. 26 tsunami.

Members of the Penan tribe of northeastern Borneo know that Batu Lawi, a 2,000-m sheer limestone pinnacle, is a demon-haunted place to be avoided at all costs. To Bruno Manser, however, Batu Lawi represented everything he loved about the untouched forest of the region. He almost perished trying to reach its summit in 1988. As he told friends, he spent 24 hours hanging from a rope, unable to reach the rock face. Only a desperate swing brought him within grabbing distance of the rock.
