Police finds over 80 kilograms of pot in Deli Serdang The Narcotics unit of the Deli Serdang police in North Sumatra, has arrested a drug runner. More than 80 kilograms of marijuana were also seized. The pot most likely originated from the province of Aceh, the northernmost province of Sumatra. The runner, Fitriadi, is a resident of the village of Kotasan in Galang and has been arrested.

43 kilograms of marijuana seized at Medan airport The customs at the international airport of Polonia near Medan have seized some 43 kilograms of marijuana that was about to be smuggled into the country via the city in North Sumatra. The head of the narcotics brigade at the airport, Jukiman Situmorang, confirmed the big catch. He added that the marijuana was detected when it went through the x-ray machine at the airport.

1.74 tons of marijuana seized by Sukabumi police The regional police of Sukabumi has seized some 1.74 tons of dried marijuana when it raided a house in the city of Sukabumi last Friday. The raid was a joint operation between the National Narcotics Brigade and the police in the region. The total value of the drugs is estimated at 6 billion Rupiah (410.000 euro). The drugs were already prepared for distribution. Four suspects were arrested during the raid.

Ecstasy factory found in North Jakarta appartment The anti-drugs unit from the Jakarta police succeeded in breaking down an ecstasy factory in an apartment in the Gading Mediterania complex in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. Three people were arrested in the apartment. Police also found evidence in the form of 17 kilo's of marijuana (worth 1.1 million euro), 31.000 tablets of ecstasy (worth 390.000 euro) , chemicals and equipment to make the drugs.

24 foreigners housed in Bali's Kerobokan prison Antara News Agency estimates that 24 foreign nationals are now housed as prisoners in Denpasar's main Kerobokan prison. Corby gets out of prison to go to beauty salon Convicted Australian drugs trafficker Schapelle Corby, who is currently serving 20 years in prison for the attempted smuggling marijuana from Bali to Australia, spent several hours in a beauty salon to have her hair and nails done. The 30-year-old was convicted of smuggling 4.1 kilograms of marijuana in 2005. Together with two security guards she was brought to a beauty salon in the Balinese capital of Denpasar. The salon is near a hospital where she has been treated for depression, according to witnesses.

Tangerang police seizes 18 kilograms of marijuana As much as 18 kilograms of marijuana was seized by the regional police of Tangerang. They also arrested a person only known by the initials E.S., which is said to be the owner of these illegal goods. In front of cameras E.S. told reporters that the goods originated from Aceh. He bought them in Cilegon, Banten. "The marijuana is from Aceh, and I bought it in Cilegon," he said to reporters. He paid some 800.000 Rupiah (55 euro) per kilogram for it in Cilegon and was able to sell it at around two million Rupiah (138 euro) per kilogram again.

Indonesia moves to lengthen jail terms Jemaah Islamiah terrorists and Australian drug offenders will spend more years in jail with Indonesia deciding to curtail their sentence remissions. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has approved regulations forcing all terrorists, drug offenders and prisoners convicted of several other serious crimes to serve at least two-thirds of their original sentences. 2,500 more troops to be pulled out soon Military police searched the bags of some 2,500 Indonesian soldiers on Sunday ahead of their withdrawal from Aceh province under the terms of a peace deal to end one of Asia's longest-running wars. The troops are scheduled to leave from the port city of Lhokseumawe on Monday, bringing to about 12,000 the number of soldiers pulled out of Aceh since September. The withdrawal will complete the second of four phases of military redeployment.

Marijuana dealer shot dead, five kgs seized South Jakarta Police shot a suspected drug dealer dead on Thursday, close to Lenteng Agung railway station in South Jakarta. A police detective of South Jakarta Police Precinct said that Tarmizi, 27, had been arrested on Monday. "We wanted to use him as bait to catch another big drug dealer. But, it seemed that the drug dealer was aware of the trap and managed to flee the scene right after the transaction," he said.

Aceh offensive breeds chaos, fear The Indonesian military says it is trying to help Aceh's 4 million people by imposing martial law and launching a land, sea and air offensive to crush separatist rebels of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). But less than two weeks after the launch of the operation, it has brought only heartbreak and fear for many Acehnese. "We are anxious and on edge," a transportation worker said. "We are at a loss what to do."

Armed with an M-16 machine gun, Sergeant Juwono was—literally—cornering the market. The Indonesian soldier stood along a main road in war-torn Aceh province selling bumper stickers commemorating the country’s upcoming Aug. 17 Independence Day. He stopped every car driving north and gave a simple but effective sales pitch: buy a sticker or else.

The deadly Christmas and New Year bombings in Indonesia and Manila, which killed 40 people and left hundreds injured, have Indonesians and Filipinos puzzled. Is radical Islam, they wonder, entering a dangerous new phase in Southeast Asia? Or is Islamic militancy, as police investigators and analysts now seem convinced, merely a convenient cover for politically powerful rivals bent on using terror campaigns in their struggle for supremacy?
