Overloaded trucks destroying Bali's roads The poor state of many roads in Bali is blamed on the blatant disregard of maximum weight limitations by trucks traveling the island's thoroughfares. According to Beritabali.com, an estimated 90% of these trucks are in violation of the maximum weight limitations imposed on every vehicle.

Ten teenagers die during concert in Bandung Ten teenagers have died during a concert of the band Beside, which was held to celebrate the launch of their new album. The concert was held in the Asia Afrika Culture Center in Bandung, western Java on Saturday evening. Until Sunday morning, the ten casualties are still in the Hasan Sadikin hospital in Bandung for autopsy. Eight of the victims have been identified by the hospital, two remain unidentified for now.

Minister: 'Bali, make up your mind about the airport' Indonesia's Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik, has issued a challenge to the people of Bali come to a clear decision in the face of growing congestion and infrastructure limitations at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport. The Minister warned that the current indecision surrounding Bali's sole airport must end and the people must decide if the current airport will be expanded or a new airport is to be built in the Buleleng, Jembrana or Karangasem areas of Bali.

Domestic workers In Indonesia subject to beatings and rape A new Amnesty International report alleges domestic workers in Indonesia face withheld wages, workdays of up to 22 hours, beatings, sexual violence and forced confinement. The report also says attempts by the government to address the problem are falling short, leaving millions of women vulnerable to abusive employers.

Santos hits oil at third Indonesia well Oil and gas producer Santos Ltd says it has had encouraging flow results from the third appraisal well at its Jeruk oil discovery in Indonesia. Initial testing of the deep well 4.9 kilometres underground saw oil flow at a choked-back rate of about 3,200 barrels per day through a 6.5mm choke, with the flow constrained by surface facility limitations.

The number of Indonesian urban poor without access to running water, an estimated 50 million people, exceeds the combined populations of Australia, Malaysia and Singapore. Nearly half of all people currently living in Jakarta, the fourth most populous city in the world, lack a piped water connection; this number of unconnected is greater than the urban population of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Indonesia defends restrictions in Aceh Indonesia said on Thursday restrictions on aid workers in Aceh were for their own safety in a province troubled by a decades-old insurgency, and voiced readiness to sit down with the rebels to seek a cease-fire. As aid agencies and Indonesian government officials put the limitations into effect, palpable signs emerged that the devastated region was beginning to pull itself together after the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami.

Indonesia to shorten FDI approval processing to 30 days The Indonesian government would drastically shorten time needed to process foreign investment licenses from 150 days to 30 days, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economy Aburizal Bakrie said. "It's usually 150 days, but we will shorten it to only 30 days.Even though the regulations have not been prepared yet, I will instruct the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) to do so as soonas possible," Aburizal was quoted by the daily Jakarta Post here Saturday as saying.

In the early hours of 2003, the very early hours, I decided it was about time to expand my world of Indonesia on the world wide web. Since about 4 years I have maintained a Dutch links-website under Startpagina ( indonesie.pagina.nl, Startpagina.nl ). Iím doing fine with that one, collecting more and more visitors over the year. Most are still Dutch, and thatís the big reason why I made the second step in uniting the Indonesian-loving community in the Netherlands. I started a forum, which was offered by Startpagina for quite some time, but I didnít want to start because I was busy working on my websites.

Indonesian economy headed for sharp fall Indonesia's fragile economy appears to be heading for a sharp fall this year as the ongoing political tussle in the country is undoing all the gains of last year. High-level sources told The Business Times that the government is now bracing itself for a possible Budget deficit that is between 20 trillion and 30 trillion rupiah (S$3.3 billion to S$5 billion) higher than earlier forecast.

Is radical Islam, they wonder, entering a dangerous new phase in Southeast Asia? Or is Islamic militancy, as police investigators and analysts now seem convinced, merely a convenient cover for politically powerful rivals bent on using terror campaigns in their struggle for supremacy?
