The district court in Surabaya has tried residents disobeying the smoking bylaw for the first time since it became in effect last year. Smoking in public areas has since been forbidden. One of the smokers that was convicted was disappointed about his trial, while he only had to pay 40,000 Rupiah (2.85 euro) in fines, where the maximum penalty has been set at 50 million Rupiah (3,571 euro).

It has been a year ago that I used the Indonesian railroad services. That was a trip from Yogyakarta to Jakarta with a dirty, cold and old-fashioned train. Trains like that are still widely available on Java. It normally is really cold on board of one of these trains, which makes traveling with them not the best option available.

The Jakarta Post reports that Garuda Indonesia has allocated US$100 million (70 million euro) for expenditure in 2010 as the first of five yearly installments that will increase the airline's present fleet from 67 to 116 aircraft. Garuda's finance director Eddy Purwanto told the press, "We plan to spend $100 million in capital expenditure in 2010 to buy more planes as well as to fulfill Garuda's other operational expenditure."

My plan was to catch the bus in the morning, so we would arrive in Yogya in the evening, but as we found out there were no morning buses departing for Yogya from Cikarang, so we just took the bus departing in the evening, because we wanted to go to Yogya anyway.

Officials in Buleleng are responding by educating the local community on preventive steps to stop the further spread of the disease.

The Indonesian airline Batavia Air has announced that they will start with two new routes. They will fly direct daily between Jakarta and Singapore as well as Semarang in Central Java and Singapore. Budget airliner AirAsia has opened up two new routes that link the Indonesian cities of Medan in North Sumatra and the capital city of Jakarta with the popular beach resort town of Phuket in Thailand. Indonesian pro-polygamy groups are not only facing protest from angry housewives and women's rights activists; a new group of men calling themselves the Men’s Coalition against Polygamy (Kolmi) has also joined the struggle. Kolmi spokesman Abdul Hamim Fauzie said via a statement in the capital Jakarta on Sunday that the coalition considered the practice of polygamous marriage degrading, not only to women, but to men as well.

Indonesia and Singapore have issued a set of stamps together on October 31, 2009. The Indonesian part of the issue contains a mini sheet with eight stamps, four full sheets with stamps, a first day cover with one set of stamps and a special presentation pack. On the stamps are images of well-known places in Indonesia and Singapore.

Indonesian exports have seen a big decrease during 2009 because of the worldwide economic crisis. Indonesian exports grew 17.7% between 2005 and 2008, higher than the 10% growth worldwide in that same period. It is expected that exports will drop some 20% this year, with exports outside the gas and oil sector decreasing 10 to 15%.

A big fire at the traditional market of Mampang, along Jalan Bangka IX in Jakarta, has destroyed the market completely. The fire brigade received information about the fire around midnight local time and sent 17 fire trucks to the location to battle the flames. Around two o'clock in the morning, the fire had largely been put out and fire crew was busy cooling down the smoldering remains of the market.

The customs at the international airport of Soekarno-Hatta near Jakarta have stopped the smuggling of some 26.8 kilograms of drugs and 17.5 liters of liquid drugs towards the Middle East. The drugs are worth some 195 billion Rupiah (13.8 million euro). Ten people from the Middle East were to fly on four separate flights to carry the drugs to their destination.

Services may be similar, it is mainly the planes belonging to Wings Air that are the problem, while those planes are quite important in the industry.

After flying with AirAsia resulted in a slight disappointment I tried to fly with Batavia Air more often. They also have a number of new planes and offer regular fares which are attractive enough to give it a try as well. The regional office of the state power company PLN in the areas of Jakarta and Tangerang have announced that they will introduce scheduled outages in large parts of the region to avoid rolling and unplanned blackouts after a substation was damaged in a fire yesterday. Generators will be put into place for important facilities like hospitals, health centers and police offices. Even some traffic lights will be powered by generators to keep the traffic flowing.

The Textile Museum in Central Jakarta is preparing to open an additional part of the museum inside the current complex to house the ever growing collection of batik. This is also done to attract more visitors to the museum as well. The head of the museum, Indra Riawan, said that they were looking to complete the planning for the new museum before the end of the year.

The baby - named Akbar, which means 'great' in Arabic - was born with a weight of 8.7 kilograms. Akbar Risuddin was born from a diabetic mother during a cesarean delivery which was quite hard to round off because of high unusual weight and size.

The Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta is to reopen next month following a renovation that took some 20 months. The luxury hotel and property will now offer 272 rooms and over 1,000 square meters of event space. The space for meetings and the banquet will have space for up to 600 guests and the meeting rooms are naturally lit.

Bandung is the next city to get some form of new public transport in the form of Trans Metro Bandung (TMB) rapid mass transport. After a long period of protests by other bus operators the new system will be put in use today. A spokesperson of the national police said Saturday that at least 184 people have been killed in homecoming traffic rush in the six days prior to the Idul Fitri holiday. National Police spokesman Maj. Gen. Nanan Sukarna told a press conference in Jakarta that at least 466 traffic accidents have occurred less than a week before the holiday.

Some media already reported that they know for sure that Noordin M. Top has been killed this time and a member of parliament also said the same.

The police are working on defusing a bomb that has been found during an anti-terror raid on a house in the village of Kepuhsari, near the city of Solo in Central Java. Dozens of police have closed off the entire neighborhood after the raid, in which a long gunfight was heard by residents. At the end of the raid there were two loud explosions. It is suspected that the police was on the hunt for suspects of the twin bombings in Jakarta last July.

The special anti-terrorist unit Densus 88 has shot and killed three suspected terrorists in a village near the city of Solo in Central Java. The bodies have been taken to the airport of Adi Soemarmo, where they will be flown to Jakarta for further examination. The three dead terrorists were the result of a night long siege on a house in the village in which Densus 88 was in a gunfight with the suspected terrorists.

Burhanuddin, a former governor of the Indonesian Central Bank has been given a three-year sentence for corruption by the Supreme Court. He will spend the prison term in the Cipinang prison in East Jakarta. "We have executed the verdict today," said the director for prosecutions of the corruption watchdog KPK, Ferry Wibisono earlier. While this case was handled by the special corruption court, Burhanuddin still had to spend the days before his verdict in detention at the national police headquarters.

The Social Affairs Agency in Jakarta has made plans to hunt down and arrest the people behind the begging syndicates in the city. Budiharjo, head of the agency, has said that there is a list of 33 names of people that are leading so-called begging syndicates in the capital city. Only 11 of these people are from Jakarta, while the others came from other places.

At least 33 people died in a powerful earthquake, which struck off Indonesia’s populous island of Java on 2 September, officials said. “At least 33 people are confirmed dead. The death toll could be much higher. The area is quite remote and communication is limited,” Health Ministry crisis center chief Rustam Pakaya told IRIN from Jakarta, the capital.

The 7.3 magnitude earthquake that shook big parts of western Indonesia has caused widespread damage in big parts of western Java. At least 15 people were killed in the quake in various locations hit by the earthquake. Priyadi Kardono, the head of the National Disaster Management Agency, said 15 people were dead in several locations. Earlier, Priyadi said six died in Cianjur alone because of a landslide that was triggered by the massive earthquake.

Some houses have also collapsed during the two-minute long 7.3 Richter Scale earthquake that took place at 14:55 local time (GMT -7). Several buildings in the capital Jakarta, some 240 kilometers away from the epicenter, had cracked walls.

Susi Air has announced that it will start serving the route Jakarta - Pangandaran via Bandung. The flight will depart from Halim Perdanakusuma airport in southern Jakarta, will make a stopover in Bandung and will continue the trip to Pangandaran from there. Normal travel time from Jakarta to Pangandaran is about six hours, but with this flight it will be shortened to about one hour.

The traffic police in the Greater Jakarta area has fined some 90 illegal street racers at several places in Jakarta early this morning. The police held raids on several locations where street races normally occur. Owners of 18 driver licenses and 72 STNK (vehicle registration cards) were handed out fines.

After three nights in 'Hotel Police Headquarters' in South Jakarta, Mohamad Jibril is now officially seen as the latest suspect in the twin suicide bombings of two hotel in Jakarta last month. "After thorough investigation, Mohamed Jibril is now an official suspect," said the head of the national police, Bambang Hendarsono Danuri after the Friday afternoon prayers.

A member of the Indonesian parliament, Ali Mochtar Ngabalin of the Partai Bulan Bintang (PBB, Moon & Star Party) has said that the police is wrong in thinking that Mohamad Jibril is involved in looking for funds to pay for acts of terrorism in Indonesia. He said this after the family of Mohamad Jibril had a meeting with some of the members of the First Commission of the parliament. They asked the police to be closely watched so that he would not be intimidated.

Cleaning the streets in Jakarta is almost impossible, but last night, members of the highway police of the Greater Jakarta Police swept the streets clean. Clean of nails that is. Jalan Gatot Subroto in the direction of Slipi and Kolong in Semanggi were cleaned by a special nail-weeper. The nail-sweeper only roamed the streets for a few hours from 23:30 to 02:00 local time, but during that time it managed to clean the streets of some two kilograms of nails.

A patient infected with the H1N1 flu died on Sunday after being treated for several days at the Persahabatan Hospital in Jakarta. She died due to severe complications and was being treated for the H1N1 virus for at least one week. She also suffered from pneumonia before she was infected with H1N1. The doctor said the complication then caused bacteria to enter her lungs which caused her to die of heart failure.
