The company made this announcement earlier today. An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter Scale, according to the Indonesian Geophysics agency, has struck 143 kilometers southeast of the city of Sukabumi, which was hit hard during the 7.3 magnitude earthquake on September 2, 2009. The earthquake struck at 07:26 local time (GMT+7) and had it's epicenter at sea. The quake was not strong enough to cause a tsunami however.

A.A., as he is named popularly, has been put on non-active shortly after his arrest. Since he was the head of the corruption watchdog, there was no way that he would be able to return to his post, even if he was to be freed later on.

A cargo train has derailed in the area of Lawang in the Malang regency in East Java province. A number of trains were delayed and services to and from the city of Surabaya were disrupted as well. At least four trains departing from Malang and Surabaya stations were delayed while the derailed train was cleared from the track by the Indonesian state-owned railway company.

High waves have caused a wooden boat to sink in the waters of the island of Halmahera in North Maluku. 15 passengers were killed in the accident while 15 others are still missing, according to the Indonesian navy. 29 of the 59 passengers and crew on board of the boat were rescued soon after the boat went down Monday late in the afternoon.

The Indonesian government said it will send a team to a poor district in eastern Papua Province after a rights group reported deaths from hunger and associated diseases there. Earlier this week, anti-terrorist police raided a house in a village near Solo in Central Java, killing four and arresting three others.

The House of Representatives has passed a new anti-narcotics bill last Monday amid criticism from anti-drug groups saying that the new law will not help rehabilitate drug addicts. "This law classifies drug addicts as criminals and therefore subjects them to criminal charges, while doctors have said that drug addiction is a curable disease," said Asmin Fransisca, the coordinator for the Indonesian Coalition for Drug Policy Reform (ICDPR).

Burhanuddin, a former governor of the Indonesian Central Bank has been given a three-year sentence for corruption by the Supreme Court. He will spend the prison term in the Cipinang prison in East Jakarta. "We have executed the verdict today," said the director for prosecutions of the corruption watchdog KPK, Ferry Wibisono earlier. While this case was handled by the special corruption court, Burhanuddin still had to spend the days before his verdict in detention at the national police headquarters.

Once again a group of gunmen opened fire at a bus belonging to the PT Freeport mine in Timika. The shooting that took place on Saturday morning injured two men. The bus was said to carry ten security guards and two cleaning service employees of PT Freeport when it was shot at near mile 42 to 43 along the main road leading to the mine around 08:50 local time (GMT+9).

According to the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) some one third of all marriages taking place in Indonesia each year involve at least one person that is under the age of 18.

The government will introduce a new policy on January 1, 2010, that will refund sales tax (VAT) spent on purchases by tourist visitors to Indonesia. The assistant train driver was killed in a train derailment of the Penataran train. The train derailed and turned over in Malang, East Java province earlier this afternoon. Six passengers were injured in the accident. The locomotive and the first wagon jumped out of the tracks and crashed into a fence in the Karanglo area in Malang. It is assumed that the train hit a water buffalo before it derailed.

The state roll road management agency in Indonesia ( BPJT) has announced that three of the largest toll road operators in the country have asked to be allowed to increase their tolls with some 12 to 19 percent this year.
