Irwandi Yusuf, a former spokesman for the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), won the first direct elections for the post on 38 percent of the December 11 vote, with his nearest rivals on less than 17 percent. New oil refinery inaugurated in Indonesia President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyonoofficially inaugurated a new oil refinery in Balongan, Indramayu, West Java province on Sunday. The Langit Biru refinery will boost the country's oil production in order to reduce the country's dependence on importedfuel, official news agency Antara reported. Susilo said that the refinery could also help save the state budget from rocketing oil prices on the international market.

Australia seeks new security pact with Indonesia Australia is considering signing a new defence and security agreement with Indonesia to replace a treaty that was scrapped after Canberra led United Nations peacekeepers into East Timor in 1999. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said yesterday the government was aware that Indonesian President-elect Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had called for the security pact - negotiated by former prime minister Paul Keating in the mid-1990s - to be renewed last year during a trip to Australia.

Nothing nurtures confidence after a change in government more than the rapid installation of a cabinet filled with seasoned professionals. That was supposed to happen within a few days of President Megawati Sukarnoputri's inauguration on July 23. It didn't happen. Then she was to finalize the list with freshly chosen vice president Hamzah Haz on July 30. No such luck. Instead, there has been relentless negotiation between officials of the big parties as Megawati was confronted by a reality of Indonesian politics — cabinet-making as a rush for the spoils.

Special session starts today Leaders of the People's Consultative Assembly have decided to accelerate impeachment proceedings against the President by convening a plenary session on Saturday morning to decide whether the special session to seek a presidential accountability can begin immediately. Should the Assembly plenary session be approved, the President may have to present his all-important accountability speech on Monday, which, if he fails to do or is rejected, could see him ousted within days.
