Golkar rejects its old image Growing resentment against calls to become loyalists of former president Soeharto has led the former dominant party, Golkar, to exercise a good measure of damage control in its campaigns by removing itself from symbols of the past regime. Soeharto was the main patron of Golkar and calls from a political party set up by his former aide, R. Hartono, for people to again become the second president's loyalists has provoked indignant cries of rejection. Hartono made the call when campaigning for his Concern for the Nation Functional Party (PPKB) in Soeharto's hometown of Yogyakarta, just as campaigners for Golkar said that the past years have been better than the current "reform" period.

Soldiers, police clash in South Sulawesi A soldier and a policeman were wounded on Thursday in shoot-outs between troops and police in the town of Palopo, Luwu regency, South Sulawesi, officials and residents said. The clash erupted briefly near the Luwu Police station at around 9:30 a.m., and ended after Army commanders arrived at the scene. However, officials could not say who had started firing first, as the investigation was still underway.

Mobs blockade Bali main highway Hundreds of residents of Gunaksa village, Dawan district, in Klungkung regency, some 40 kilometers east of here, blocked the provincial southern primary highway early on Friday in an apparent protest over a previous dispute.In the previous incident, some Gunaksa residents were threatened by four armed hoodlums from the neighboring village of Sampalan.

Parking agency in cahoots with hoods To increase the city's parking revenue, the local authority plans to cooperate with unofficial parking attendants who have control of one-third of street parking here and offer them a shared account mechanism, an official said on Wednesday. The proposed mechanism is part of a new partnership program with unofficial parties in collecting parking fees, deputy head of the City Parking Agency Sukri Bey said.
