Former rebel wins governor race in Aceh A former rebel leader has been officially declared the winner of gubernatorial elections in Aceh province, the electoral commission said Friday, confirming initial quick-count results earlier this month. Irwandi Yusuf, who was in jail for treason when the Indian Ocean tsunami crashed into Aceh in 2004, won 38 percent of the vote. His closest rival, Ahmad Humam Hamid, trailed with 16 per cent, provincial election chief Muhammad Jafar told reporters.

The waitresses, however, had gone about placing ashtrays on every table, encouraging some participants to light up. "It's a fact, the smoking ban is not effective. I don't know why the management of this cafe allows people to smoke," said the moderator of the discussion, Tubagus Haryo Karbiyanto, who chairs the air quality division of the Jakarta Caucus for the Environment.

Barnabas Suebu named Papua governor Barnabas Suebu was officially named the winner of Papua's direct gubernatorial election following a 10-hour plenary session of the provincial General Elections Commission (KPUD) on Monday. In the March 10 election, former governor Barnabas and his running mate, Golkar Party legislator Alexander Hessegem, garnered 354,763 of the over 1.1 million valid votes. Over 17,000 votes were declared invalid and thrown out.

Blok M in South Jakarta to get major makeover The Jakarta administration plans to rearrange the already-crowded and chaotic area of Blok M, South Jakarta, to make it a commercial center. The plan is aimed at curbing the fast-growing businesses, which have encroached on the residential areas of South Jakarta. "Blok M area will become a more comfortable commercial center with more space available to accommodate businesses," assistant to the city secretary for development affairs IGKG Suena said on Monday. "As a consequence, we will also clear the area of street vendors."

Building owners OK wider sidewalk In order to make way for wider pedestrian sidewalks, the owners of 22 buildings along Jl. Thamrin, Central Jakarta, have agreed to take their fences back a notch. The additional width provided by the buildings varied from 0.6 meter to 3.5 meters, said head of the City Parks Agency open spaces division Mochamad Setyadi, on Monday. "Not all sidewalks will be six meters wide as initially planned," he said.

No major changes allowed to Hotel Indonesia An official at the Jakarta Culture and Museum Agency says no proposal for the renovation of Hotel Indonesia has been submitted. The hotel, the management of which has been taken over by cigarette producer Djarum Group, is a heritage site. The head of the agency's supervision division, Candrian Attahiyyat, warned on Thursday that no renovation work should take place without the contractors meeting the rigid requirements set by the agency. "Changing the original structure and appearance of a building classified as an A-class heritage site like Hotel Indonesia is not allowed," he said.

3-in-1 extension to start on Monday The Jakarta administration will kick off on Monday the tryout of an extended three-in-one traffic policy along the 12.9-kilometer corridor of the bus rapid transit (BRT) or busway, from Blok M, South Jakarta, to Kota, West Jakarta. Bali says no to stripteases A tourism official in Bali has criticized certain nightclubs on the resort island that entertain visitors with striptease performances. Pemuteran village, Gerokgak subdistrict, Buleleng, Bali, is gaining fame as a haven for tourists with a deep love for meditation and the sea as well as a site for a captive breeding program of three rare turtle species. Until the 1980s, many turtles were laying eggs in the sands of Bali's beaches. Of the world's six turtle species, five have their home in Bali. Unfortunately, turtle hunting has not only left the island's turtles nearly extinct but has also discouraged them from ever visiting Bali's beaches any more.

Explosion at Governor Sutiyoso's official residence Jakarta's number one resident, Governor Sutiyoso is not immune to the spat of terror attacks rocking the capital as an explosion slightly shattered the official gubernatorial mansion late Thursday night. No casualties, other than a minor injury to a houeshold staff named Budi, were reported in the incident that occurred at about 8:25 p.m. The explosive, believed to be from a granade, damaged the front roof of the garage located outside the main residential building.

City will not impose new taxi fares soon: Sutiyoso Taxi commuters can still enjoy services at the usual fares after the city administration decided to postpone the introduction of new fares for the near future. Governor Sutiyoso said on Tuesday that he would still need to discuss thematter with related institutions before imposing the new taxi fare. "The new fare will not be imposed in November because I have not receivedthe letter of recommendation from the city council. "So, I will not issue the decree on the fare hike in the near future," he told journalists. Sutiyoso said that although the city council had recommended a 45-percent hike, it did not mean that the administration would impose the same percentage. "I have not decided anything on the hike percentage," he said.
