Government to announce another cut in fuel prices on Friday The government is set to announce another cut in the prices of subsidized premium gasoline, diesel oil, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) on Friday (Jan. 16). Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said stated here on Wednesday that the government had shortened the fuel pricing period to biweekly from monthly as originally planned.

PLN signs deal on 1,200 MW power plant Indonesia state electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) signed a preliminary deal with U.S. energy firm AES Corp.), Japanese trading firm Sojitz and local firm PT Triaryani to build a 1,200 megawatt coal-fired power plant, the energy minister said on Wednesday. The cost of the project, to be located in South Sumatra, in the west of the archipelago, is estimated at about $1.5 billion.

Subsidy cut to fuel the fire In the wake of a two-month "mini crisis" that saw the rupiah hit a four-year low of 11,750 per dollar on August 30, Jakarta has finally announced an imminent and substantial reduction in fuel subsidies. The exact date and the level of cuts have yet to be announced, though there is widespread speculation over both. Vice President Jusuf Kalla has said fuel prices may rise as early as October 1 while National Development Planning Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has said an increase in November would be too late to help reduce subsidies to the level of Rp89.2 trillion. She said fuel prices might increase by at least 50% in October.

Megawati says 2005 deficit to narrow Indonesia's budget deficit will fall by almost a third, President Megawati Soekarnoputri said, as the fastest economic growth in nine years boosts revenue. The government's deficit next year will probably be 16.9 trillion rupiah ($1.83 billion), or 0.8 percent of gross domestic product, Megawati said in a speech to parliament to present the 2005 draft budget. That is 31 percent less than the 24.4 trillion rupiah projected for this year.

Fuel prices up by an average of 14.46% State oil and gas firm Pertamina announced on Thursday an average 14.46 percent increase in fuel prices for this month from the levels in April. Pertamina said in a statement that, with effect from May 3, the price of premium gasoline was raised to Rp 1,750 (about 18.81 U.S. cents) per liter, from Rp 1,600 and automotive diesel oil to Rp 1,400, from Rp 1,250. Industrial diesel oil increased to Rp 1,390, from Rp 1,240, kerosene for industry to Rp 1,410, from Rp 1,310 and fuel oil to Rp 1,120, from Rp 1,030, Pertamina said. Kerosene for households and small industry remains at Rp 600.
