Sometime around 1969, two men, Abu Bakar Bashir,and Abdullah Sungkar, began an operation to propagate the Darul Islam movement, a conservative strain of Islam. Darul Islam was almost eliminated in the 1950s after members belonging to that sect instigated a rebellion in an effort to create an Islamic state in parts of Indonesia.

Indonesia jails Singapore Muslim militant An Indonesian court has jailed the alleged Singapore chief of a radical Muslim network, who has admitted to plans to attack U.S. facilities in the city state, for immigration offences, an official said on Tuesday. Mulianto, a senior official at the Dumai court in Riau province on Sumatra island, said Mas Selamat Kastari was convicted on Monday and given an 18-month sentence. Riau lies next to Singapore.

A Mitsubishi minibus packed with plastic explosives snaked its way through Kuta's tourist strip at 11p, on Saturday on a terror mission which has now claimed a confirmed 30 Australian lives.
