Death toll rises to 34 after Merapi eruptions The death toll has risen to at least 34 following Mount Merapiís latest eruption, officials said Thursday. According to hospital medics, 33 bodies had been under the supervision of Dr. Sardjito Hospital, while one other in Panti Nugroho Slemen Hospital.

Japan to accept 1,000 nurses from Indonesia Japan is to accept 1,000 nurses and health care workers from Indonesia starting early next year under the free trade pact. They need these workers to ease the shortage of such staff. This will be the first time that Japan is bringing foreign nurses and care workers on a full-time basis. Starting in April, Japan will accept 200 licensed nurses and 300 certified health care workers per year.

65 schools torched in war-torn Aceh Scores of schools were torched on Tuesday in the rebellious province of Aceh, where a renewed military offensive has already left five separatist rebels dead, military officials said. A total of 65 school buildings were burned to the ground in the eastern Aceh district of Bireun, 1,575 kilometres northwest of Jakarta, including one elementary school building that was razed by an unidentified man Tuesday morning, eyewitnesses said.
