This was in the picture! #3 This time indeed no picture of Indonesian nature, but a building project that has never been finished. The picture was a part of a concrete pillar which eventually should have become an elevated toll road. That highway was never constructed and these pillars are lost in the landscape along Kali Malang in the regency of Bekasi, directly east of Jakarta. To view the picture in our new large format, please visit the picture gallery 'Seeing is believing'.

The bus trip from Surabaya to Malang Sitting in a bus is not something that I do with the greatest love. However every once in a while I will still do something that I don't want to do every single day. After the flight from Yogyakarta to Surabaya in the early morning, I didn't reach my final destination for the day - by far. But fortunately I had already taken that into account when I booked the ticket. At that time I decided to use only public transport to find my way to Malang, which was my final destination for the day.

Indonesia's monorail struggles to get on track Gridlocked cars. Noxious traffic fumes. Indonesia's capital is crying out for a new transport network, but stop-start plans for a monorail illustrate the country's chequered efforts to build badly needed infrastructure. The idea of a gleaming monorail gliding above the congested tropical city of nearly 9 million people is an enticing one and proponents point to neighbouring Bangkok's Skytrain or Kuala Lumpur's monorail in at least easing equally grim transport woes.

The gray ooze that ate the villages Nothing, it seems, can stop the mud. For more than three months, the hot, noxious goop has spewed up through a crack in the earth at a natural-gas exploration site, swamping everything in its path. The expanding, surreal gray lake with the stench of rotten eggs has enveloped more than 10 square miles of land in eastern Java, Indonesia's most densely populated island. The flow has forced 8,000 to 10,000 people from their homes, engulfed about a dozen factories, contaminated fish farms and intermittently closed a major highway.

Facing a meltdown in its transportation system, the Jakarta government now dreams of a high-speed subway, elevated trains and modern buses to efficiently move its 12 million inhabitants. Experts conducting a S$15-million study hope to ease the severe gridlock that often turns a 5-km trip into a half-hour crawl.
