W. Sumatra earthquake damages 65 cultural heritage sites Some 65 cultural heritage sites in the province of West Sumatra have sustained damage in the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the province on September 30, 2009. The head of the cultural heritage conservation for West Sumatra, Riau and Riau Island, Fitra Alda, told that old and historically important buildings were damaged in the city of Padang.

6.7 magnitude earthquake hits Nusa Tenggara An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter Scale has hit the area of Raba on the island of Sumbawa in Nusa Tenggara ('the Lesser Sunda Islands'). The quake took place at 03:41 local time in the morning. The earthquake was not powerful enough to cause a tsunami, but was felt as far as the resort island of Bali and the city of Makassar in South Sulawesi.

Asteroid crashes to earth near South Sulawesi Picture this: A 10-meter wide asteroid hits Earth and explodes in the atmosphere with the energy of a small atomic bomb. Frightened by thunderous sounds and shaking walls, people rush out of their homes, thinking that an earthquake is in progress. All they see is a twisting trail of debris in the mid-day sky. This is what happened on Oct. 8th around 11 am local time in the coastal town of Bone, South Sulawesi.

Reconstruction of West Sumatra will cost 7 trillion The Indonesian government has made a first estimation about the costs of rehabilitation and reconstruction of the quake-hit area of West Sumatra. The total costs are now estimated at 7 trillion Rupiah (500 million euro). "We have not set the actual budget for the rehabilitation and reconstruction program, but for the time being it may cost Rp 7 trillion," said the Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare, Agung Laksono.

7.3 magnitude earthquake hits Maluku Residents of Saumlaki, and some other cities in the Maluku archipelago panicked and alarmed their traditional alarms when a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck their area at 23:40 local time (GMT+9) last evening. Residents fled their houses and sounded the alarm to indicate to others that they had to flee to a safe place told Mouthy Siwabessy, a resident of Saumlaki.

West Sumatra quake survivors receive temporary shelters The Indonesian government and aid agencies have begun building temporary shelters for hundreds of thousands of people displaced by last month's earthquake in West Sumatra Province. The 7.6 magnitude earthquake on 30 September left 1,117 people dead, more than 1,200 seriously injured and over 135,000 homes badly damaged or destroyed.

Power outages after 6.0 magnitude quake hits Manokwari An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter Scale struck just 13 kilometers southeast of the city of Manokwari in Papua. According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency BMKG the quake took place at 20:15 local time (GMT+9). The earthquake was measured at a depth of 23 kilometers, but was not strong enough to cause a tsunami.

Increased activity for Mount Kaba volcano in Bengkulu In recent weeks, the Kaba volcano in the province of Bengkulu, West Sumatra, has showed an increase in activity. At a number of places there are signs of increased volcanic activity visible. A number of new cone-shaped piles of volcanic material has formed and the volcano is also exhausting small plumes of white smoke.

6.4 magnitude earthquake shakes West Java An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter Scale just shook western parts of Java and southern parts of Sumatra. The quake was located at sea at just 42 kilometers of Ujung Kulon, off the western tip of the island of Java. The quake was felt throughout western parts of the island, but no information about casualties or damages is known at the moment.

Moderate earthquake hits near Jayapura An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter Scale shook Jayapura and surroundings at around 21:10 local time (GMT+9) last night. The quake caused panic among residents in the capital city. "We were afraid of a repeat of what happened in Padang," told a resident in the district of Kutaraja in Abepura.

Moderate earthquake hits Southeast Sulawesi A moderately strong earthquake struck Southeast Sulawesi early on Friyday morning local time. According to the U.S. Geological Survey the quake had a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter Scale, but the Indonesian BMKG reported it as a 5.8 magnitude earthquake.

1,115 bodies recovered after West Sumatra earthquake The death toll of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that shook West Sumatra on September 30 has reached 1,115 according to local and regional authorities in the region. The disaster management team in the region said that most people had been killed in the Padang Pariaman district, where 675 bodies were recovered. 313 bodies were found in the provincial capital of Padang.

Padang and Pariaman have power again The cities of Padang and Pariaman have power again, for the first time since the September 30 earthquake struck the area of West Sumatra. During the quake, Padang was completely cut off from any power, but in the days after regular blackouts occurred while the system was under maintenance.

724 bodies recovered after West Sumatra earthquake The West Sumatra disaster management coordination unit (Satkorlak) put the death toll from Wednesday’s devastating earthquake in West Sumatra at 724 as of Tuesday evening and 285 others were still missing. Villages vanished in massive landslides Several villages have been wiped off the map after quake-triggered landslides covered up three or four entire villages in the hills and mountains on the western coast of the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, which has been hit hard by last weeks 7.6 magnitude earthquake just 45 kilometers away from the city of Padang. Over 600 bodies have been recovered, but fears are that many thousands more are buried under collapsed buildings and landslides.

608 bodies recovered; mass grave prepared The official death toll of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake in the area of Padang, West Sumatra, has now reached 608 people. 285 of the death were found in Padang Pariaman, 242 in Padang, 32 in Pariaman, 32 in Agam, 10 in Pesisir Selatan, 4 in Solok and 3 in Pasaman Barat. 343 others have been recorded as missing, but fears are that several thousand other are still buried under collapsed buildings and landslides.

Smell of death spreads in Padang Five days after the earthquake in West Sumatra, the city of Padang starts to smell like death as bodies of diseased people start to decay. The bad smell rises from most collapsed buildings in the city now, indicating that there are still many bodies under the debris which have not been evacuated. Some of the sites that have started to spread the smell of death are the Ambacang Hotel, the central market, the BNI building and the Adira offices.

Four villages wiped out completely by landslides At least four remote villages in the hilly areas along the western coast of Sumatra have been wiped out by landslides that were triggered by the 7.6 magnitude earthquake on September 30. It is estimated that over 600 people are buried. The government has said that the current death toll stands at 540, with most deaths in urban areas like Padang and Pariaman.

60 Australians feared missing in Padang The Australian government has started checking hospitals in and around the city of Padang in West Sumatra to find some 60 citizens which are thought to be in the area when the earthquake struck. An official said that they were still unaccounted for at the moment. Earlier Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd zaid that there were no reports of Australians being injured or killed in the quake.

Beautiful city of Padang destroyed by earthquake The beautiful Minangkabau city of Padang, in West Sumatra, Indonesia, has been heavily damaged in the September 30 earthquake just three days ago. Hundreds missing in landslide after earthquake Not only Padang has been hit hard by the 7.6 magnitude earthquake of September 30, 2009. A village in the district of Gunung Tigo, near the city of Pariaman, has been wiped of the map completely when an earthquake-triggered landslide came down on the village, covering some 300 houses. Many hundreds of people are expected to be buried here.

One liter of fuel for 40,000 Rupiah in Padang The price of fuel in the city of Padang and surrounding regions has jumped to absurd levels soon after the earthquake. With most gas stations too damaged to be opened for service and others not being able to sell fuel because of shortages, traders can ask almost anything for just one liter of fuel. Most fuel now costs 40,000 Rupiah per liter (2.85 euro) where this normally is 5,500 Rupiah per liter (0.39 euro) for fuel sold in the streets.

52 bodies recovered from collapsed hotel Until this moment, 52 bodies have been pulled from the rubble of Hotel Ambacang, one of the biggest hotels in the city of Padang that was flattened during the earthquake of September 30. Eight people were pulled out the rubble alive after some two days of fighting to stay alive in between the rubble of the hotel.

Over 450 dead after devastating earthquake The number of deaths after the 7.6 magnitude earthquake yesterday afternoon keeps on rising. The Department of Social Affairs has said that 467 people have died as a result of the earthquake that shook the area of Pariaman and Padang in West Sumatra. Staff at the emergency center of the department have also said that they have recorded 421 people that were injured.

7.0 magnitude earthquake shakes Bengkulu In a separate event, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7,0 on the Richter Scale has his the Bengkulu area of West Sumatra earlier his morning. The worst hit area's were Jambi and Bengkulu The earthquake struck at 09:31 local time (GMT +7) and was located at 54 kilometers away from Muko-Muko in Bengkulu. De quake was localized at a depth of ten kilometers.

80 schoolchildren trapped under collapsed school As much as 80 schoolchildren are trapped in the Bimbingan Belajar Primagama school along Jalan Proklamasi in the city of Padang. The building has been flattened by the 7.6 magnitude earthquake last afternoon. Based on information, local residents and some members of a search and rescue team are digging through the rubble by hand to find survivors and recover bodies.

75 killed in Sumatra quake Padang Mayor Fauzi Bahar said Wednesday at least 75 people had been killed during the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that rocked West Sumatra earlier in the afternoon. Kompas.com reported the mayor had phoned Vice President Jusuf Kalla to inform him of the number during an emergency Cabinet meeting at Kalla's house in Central Jakarta this evening.

7.6 magnitude earthquake off Sumatra island A strong undersea earthquake struck off the western coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island late Wednesday afternoon, but there were no immediate reports of injury and damage, seismologists said. The quake, measuring at 7.6 on the Richter scaled, struck at 5:16 pm (1016 GMT) at a depth of 71 kilometers, about 57 kilometers south-west of Pariaman on West Sumatra province, Indonesia's National Meteorological and Geophysics Agency (BMG) said.

5.5 magnitude aftershock south of Java An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter Scale, according to the Indonesian Geophysics agency, has struck 143 kilometers southeast of the city of Sukabumi, which was hit hard during the 7.3 magnitude earthquake on September 2, 2009. The earthquake struck at 07:26 local time (GMT+7) and had it's epicenter at sea. The quake was not strong enough to cause a tsunami however.

210,000 people homeless after West Java earthquake The total number of people that have become homeless has reached 210,000 people in total now. Last Monday the figure only stood at over 186,000 people, but this increased to 210,000 people today because counting was still going on in many quake-hit areas in western Java.

The quake had place around 23:12 local time (GMT+7) and caused residents to flee their houses. According to the head of the Meteorological and Geophysical Agency in Yogyakarta said that the quake took place on the ocean at a distance of 253 kilometers southeast of Wonosari, the capital of the district of Gunungkidul, in the province.

Mud leak appear in Sukahening village Just a few days after the heavy earthquake of September 2, 2009, the village of Sukahening in the district of Tasikmalaya has become the scene of a new natural event, a mud leak. Based on observations by television station Metro TV, the mud is pushed out of the earth in a hole with a diameter of up to two meters. The village of Sukahening is some 25 kilometers away from the city of Tasikmalaya.

Large cracks in crater-edge Mount Galunggung The edge of the crater of the Mount Galunggung volcano in the district of Tasikmalaya in West Java province has cracked over a length of 300 meters. The crack is just about a centimeter wide however, but it is assumed that the large earthquake of September 2, 2009 is the cause. The activity of the volcano however is not increasing. The crack is only dangerous because it can cause a landslide.

Thousands left seeking shelter after Java quake Thousands of Indonesians are struggling to find shelter several days after a powerful earthquake, which killed at least 57 people, struck off the coast of the heavily populated Java island. 1,500 houses flattened in Tasikmalaya Yesterdays heavy earthquake in western Java, has caused thousands of houses in the district of Tasikmalaya to be heavily damaged and partly flattened. Based on the latest information, some 1,500 houses and other buildings were completely flattened during the quake. Some 900 other houses are almost flattened. Residents are spending their time in tents and government buildings.

Southern Bandung and Cilacap report heavy damage The area of South Bandung, mainly areas like Ciwidey and Pangalengan, emerge as areas which have been worst hit by the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that his western Java earlier this afternoon. Based on information from search and rescue teams, almost all houses in the two areas are heavily damaged. The Hyatt Hotel in the city reports that the swimming pool is leaking.

60 missing in Cianjur landslide About 60 residents of Gunung Hafani, in the Cianjur district are still missing after an earthquake-triggered landslide hit their village. Based on information from the village head, Sulaiman, there should be some 60 people under the rubble, or 12 families. They were unable to flee from the location as they were living below the hillside that came down.

15 dead in quake; reports from huge damage area The 7.3 magnitude earthquake that shook big parts of western Indonesia has caused widespread damage in big parts of western Java. At least 15 people were killed in the quake in various locations hit by the earthquake. Priyadi Kardono, the head of the National Disaster Management Agency, said 15 people were dead in several locations. Earlier, Priyadi said six died in Cianjur alone because of a landslide that was triggered by the massive earthquake.

Video's show panic during 7.3 magnitude earthquake The two video's below show the panic that occurred during the two-minute long 7.3 magnitude earthquake that was felt in big parts of western Indonesia. In Bandung, the third largest city in the country, power was out for several hours after the quake. 5.1 aftershock follows, no tsunami reported The earthquake with a strength of 7.4 on the Richter Scale that shook large parts of western Indonesia at 14:55 local time (GMT +7) was followed by an aftershock of 5.1 on the Richter Scale. The epicenter of this quake was close to the main earthquake. A tsunami-alarm was broadcasted on Indonesian tv-channels within five minutes of the earthquake. 6.9 earthquake strikes in the Banda Sea A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 has hit the waters of the Banda Sea earlier today. The quake had place ar 09:51 local time (GMT+7) at a depth of 670 kilometers below the seabed. Because of it's depth, it did not create a tsunami. The center of the earthquake was 234 kilometers southeast of Bau-Bau and the tremor was felt as far away as Waingapu on the island of Sumba. The quake was also felt as a light earthquake in the cities of Kupang and Ende.

Two small earthquakes hit Yogyakarta Two small earthquakes have hit Yogyakarta in recent days. Three days ago, on August 19, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 struck just south of the province in the Indian Ocean. This quake was felt on the island as well and caused some panic. The earthquake that struck today however took place on land, just 13 kilometers southeast of the town of Bantul and had a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter Scale.

It was felt as far away as the district of North Tapanuli. The earthquake caused damage to houses in that district as well.
