British, Japanese citizens arrested for drug smuggling in Bali Indonesian authorities arrested two foreigners, one British and one Japanese, as well as one national for smuggling drugs into the country at island beach resort, Bali, local authorities said Monday. The three could face possible execution.

-Khuram Antonio Khan Garcia, 39, a from the United Kingdom, was arrested after arriving on a Qatar Airways flight at around 8 p.m. local time. He was carrying 3.1 kilograms (6.8 pounds) of crystal methamphetamine, which was hidden in the lining of his suitcase, airport official Bagus Endro Wibowo explained.

-The drugs, officials said, were worth around 9.5 billion rupiah ($1.07 million).

-After his arrest at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport, local authorities questioned Garcia, and according to his statements, he revealed the identities two accomplices.

-As a result, officials subsequently arrested Yan Zacharia Santosa, 31, from Jakarta, who was staying in Bali at the moment and was reportedly supposed to receive the drugs and later distribute them.

-Morita Yuki, 35, from Japan, was also arrested after arriving later in the evening from Bangkok, Thailand. He was carrying 6 kilograms (13.2 pounds) of hashish in his suitcase, which was calculated to be worth around 3.5 billion rupiah ($395,500).

-All three suspects will be handed over to the Bali Police's Narcotics Division where they will be facing the country's harsh anti-drug policies.

The Filipino woman, whose name is being held for privacy reasons, was arrested on April 25 at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta by Customs authorities.

The Denpasar District Court imposed a sentence of 6 years in prison and a fine of Rp. 10 million (8,900 euro) in lieu of an additional 6 months added to the base sentence.

3.5 kilograms of heroin seized in port of Dumai The customs in Dumai have seized some 3.5 kilograms of heroin from Malaysia bound for Indonesia. The total value of the illegal drugs is estimated at some 6.5 billion Rupiah (580,000 euro). The drugs were seized after a 45-year-old woman was arrested after she arrived from Malaka in Malaysia with the Indomal Ekspress V.

20 year jail term for rape and murder of Japanese tourist A judge on Bali has sentenced the 26-year-old David Goltar Wicaksono to 20 years in prison for the rape and murder of the 33-year old Rikasano, a Japanese tourist. The perpetrator, from Malang in East Java, was arrested late last year as a suspect in the case and was indeed found to be guilty now.

3.6 million drug users in Indonesia National Narcotics Agency (BNN) Secretary Insp. Gen. Bambang Abimanyu said Monday that Indonesia had as many as 3.6 million recorded drug users, around two percent of the countryís population, in 2008. However, Bambang admitted that the data did not reveal the actual number of drug users in the country.

Police finds over 80 kilograms of pot in Deli Serdang The Narcotics unit of the Deli Serdang police in North Sumatra, has arrested a drug runner. More than 80 kilograms of marijuana were also seized. The pot most likely originated from the province of Aceh, the northernmost province of Sumatra. The runner, Fitriadi, is a resident of the village of Kotasan in Galang and has been arrested.

Malaysian arrested with 10,000 ecstasy tablets Customs in Tanjung Balai in Karimun Riau have arrested a Malaysian when he wanted to enter Indonesia with some 10,000 tablets of ecstasy and two kilograms of marijuana. The person, only identified as 45-year-old L.C.H. was asked to stop when he almost walked through the door leaving the harbor. Scanners here detected that something was going on.

Malaysian woman arrested with crystal meth and pills New Years Eve brought a nice little surprise from Malaysia for the customs at the international airport of Ngurah Rai on Bali. The 26-year-old Malaysian Phoon Yue Chin was arrested there because she had illegal narcotics with her when she arrived on the paradise island. She came alone and did not bring any luggage outside her hand bag, which was checked by customs straight away.

Uh oh, Australian arrested with two grams of marijuana An Australian dad, Robert Paul McJannett (48) who flew to Bali with his 21-year-old son yesterday evening, has been arrested for possession of illegal drugs. This case however does not seem to be the standard smuggling case, but just 'bringing along personal belongings', since Robert Paul only brought two grams of marijuana.

The islands are known as very free; drugs are said to be widely available. Unfortunately, possession and use of drugs in Indonesia is usually punished with many years behind bars.

Rp 200 billion drug smuggling plot Jakarta airport foiled The customs at the international airport of Soekarno-Hatta near Jakarta have stopped the smuggling of some 26.8 kilograms of drugs and 17.5 liters of liquid drugs towards the Middle East. The drugs are worth some 195 billion Rupiah (13.8 million euro). Ten people from the Middle East were to fly on four separate flights to carry the drugs to their destination.

Drug addicts seen as criminals under new law The House of Representatives has passed a new anti-narcotics bill last Monday amid criticism from anti-drug groups saying that the new law will not help rehabilitate drug addicts. "This law classifies drug addicts as criminals and therefore subjects them to criminal charges, while doctors have said that drug addiction is a curable disease," said Asmin Fransisca, the coordinator for the Indonesian Coalition for Drug Policy Reform (ICDPR).

1.74 tons of marijuana seized by Sukabumi police The regional police of Sukabumi has seized some 1.74 tons of dried marijuana when it raided a house in the city of Sukabumi last Friday. The raid was a joint operation between the National Narcotics Brigade and the police in the region. The total value of the drugs is estimated at 6 billion Rupiah (410.000 euro). The drugs were already prepared for distribution. Four suspects were arrested during the raid.

3.6 million drug addicts in Indonesia The Badan Narkotika Nasional (BNN, National Narcotics Brigade) in Indonesia has said that the country currently has 3.6 million registered addicts of various kinds of narcotics. It is estimated that only some ten percent of the cases around drug abuse surfaces, which makes people believe that the problem is in fact far larger.

Schappelle Corby goes crazy in Bali prison Australian drug smuggler Schappelle Corby is going crazy in Balinese prison where she has to fulfill a 20-year jail term after trying to smuggle several kilograms of marijuana from Bali to Australia. In a psychiatric report she is said to be 'hanging by a thread', and should be reviewed as soon as possible for being sent home to Australia to finish her sentence there. An Australian psychiatrist was allowed to visit Corby last month.

89 kilograms of marijuana found in one room The local police in Depok have succeeded in seizing 89 kilograms of marijuana ready to be distributed in a boarding house in the Pancoran Mas Permai housing complex in the city in West Java province. The police was not able to arrest the person who was about to distribute the drugs, only known by his initials A.Y.

1.8 kilograms of heroin: in prison for life A court in South Jakarta has demanded a life sentence for Raysi Yolanda, which smuggled 1.8 kilograms of heroin. The head of the judges of the South Jakarta court, Setia Untung Arimuladi, said yesterday that the demanded sentence was read to the suspect one day earlier.

Dozens arrested in Stadium Club after brawl The local police of West Jakarta has arrested 25 people after a brawl in the Stadium Club discotheque in Taman Sari, North Jakarta. All people were searched and a number of weapons like big knives, wooden sticks and bamboo were seized from those arrested. A spokesperson of the police told that they have checked up on 42 people in total. 18 of them were released almost immediately because a lack of evidence that they were involved in the brawl.

Destroying imported food part of strict import policy The Bali branch of the Agency for the Supervision of Food and Drugs (BPOM) has conducted on-site destruction of imported food items at several locations around Bali. On Friday, July 10, 2009, a total of 277 different products were crushed and burned in the parking lot of the Bali Deli. The items, not included on the BPOM's list of approved imports included products from Portugal, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, South Korea, U.S.A. and China.

Bali's longest staying guests prove hard to handle Bali Police officials' attempts to undertake a drugs and narcotics sweep of Kerobokan prison on Thursday, June 19, 2009, collapsed when angry inmates refused the order of armed police personnel to return to their cells. According to local press reports, some of the prisoners verbally abused and threw stones at the contingent of three truckloads of armed police drawn from the police's mobile brigade together with narcotics and intelligence officers from the Bali police headquarters.
