Court upholds ban on 'Balibo' Calling the film "violent" and "sensitive", the Jakarta State Administrative Court upheld a ban on the Australian feature film Balibo. A panel of judges ruled that the Film Censorship Board (LSF) had fulfilled the administrative procedures required to ban the controversial film. The court agreed with the LSF’s argument that the film "can open old wounds".

Habibie: Suharto should face corruption charges Indonesia's former dictator Suharto should stand trial on charges he embezzled at least US$600 million during his 32-year reign, his successor was quoted Friday as saying. The attorney general's office said recently it was dropping the long stalled graft-case against Suharto, who was overthrown in 1998 amid nationwide riots, citing a heart problem and a series of strokes that left him with brain damage.

Iran's President arrives in Indonesia amid N-row Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Jakarta early Wednesday for a visit during which he may ask Indonesia to play a mediating role with Western nations over his country's contested nuclear program, AFP reported. Ahmadinejad was greeted amid tight security by Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda and about two dozen Indonesian and Iranian officials.

Irian Jaya political showdown brewing With only two days left before the direct gubernatorial elections in West Irian Jaya, the divide between supporters and opponents of the polls deepened on Thursday. The Papuan People's Assembly (MRP), representing Papuans opposed to the elections, met with political leaders in Jakarta and warned of civil unrest if the elections proceed as planned in the province, whose establishment they claim is illegal.

Indonesia court throws out Wiranto's election appeal An Indonesian court on Monday dismissed an appeal from presidential hopeful Wiranto against the July 5 election results, ending the ex-general's bid for the country's top job. Former military chief Wiranto appealed to the constitutional court last week, arguing that he lost more than 5.4 million votes due to irregularities in the first round of Indonesia's first direct presidential election.

Indonesia looks set for a highly uncertain post-election period Two things are fairly certain about Indonesia's upcoming general election on Monday. The first is that the outcome of the poll remains uncertain; the second is that more political uncertainty is the last thing Indonesia's economy needs this year. Five years ago, Indonesia held it's first "free and fair" election in decades, with more than 90 percent of the electorate flocking to the polls in a celebratory mood to cast their votes for change after 32 years of dictatorial rule under former autocrat president Suharto.

Eight parties thought to have failed screening Eight political parties could be dismissed from the ongoing verification process being conducted by the General Elections Commission (KPU) for failing to submit the required documents. Dismissal would keep the parties -- the Glorious Marhaen Nationalist Party, Gotong Royong Party, Islamic Party, Pro-Republic Party, Republic of Indonesia Union Party, Catholic Party, Indonesian Workers Party and the Indonesian Nationalist Unity Party -- from contesting the legislative elections next year.
