Ombudsman: 'Doctors strike might harm public`s rights' An Indonesian ombudsman has asked the doctors association not to stage another strike or rally as it might harm the public rights of receiving medical treatment. The doctors association and the government must immediately evaluate the medical care standard procedure in various regions as a valid regulation instrument, Hendra Nurtjahjo, the Ombudsman of the prevention division, said on Thursday.

Exiled Papua rebel leader returns home A former Free Papua Movement's leader, Nicolaas Jouwe, who has been in overseas exile for years returned to Indonesia for a visit on Thursday and planned to meet with the country's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono before visiting his birthplace of Papua. Co-founder of the movement arrived here on Thursday and he met with Indonesian Minister of People Welfare and Poverty Alleviation Aburizal Bakrie at his office here Friday.

Ex-rebel faces new fight as governor of Aceh A former rebel inaugurated as governor of the Indonesian province of Aceh has said he now faced a new and lengthy fight for his people's welfare. Irwandi Yusuf, a former spokesman for the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), won the first direct elections for the post on 38 percent of the December 11 vote, with his nearest rivals on less than 17 percent. "We are grateful and thank all the people in Aceh for trusting us with this job. We realise that we are given a big task," Yusuf told his supporters Thursday.

SBY denounces Timor Leste PM for linking unrest with Indonesia Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday denounced Timor Leste Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri for accusing pro-Indonesia militiamen of involving in the bloody riots in the tiny country in the last few weeks. Susilo said Alkatiri's remarks could spark a new problem in the bilateral ties between Indonesia and its former province, which seceded in 1999 under a U.N.-sponsored referendum and gained independence three years later.

'Pesantren' communities unable to accept pluralism, tolerance The recent research conducted by the International Center for Islam and Pluralism (ICIP), the Indonesian Islamic Boarding School Association (BKSPPI) and AusAID, in which I was involved, shows that many pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), both traditional (salaf) and modern, in West Java reject pluralism as they perceive this as an acceptance of the relativity of religion -- or rejecting the notion that Islam is the absolute truth.

Australia seeks new security pact with Indonesia Australia is considering signing a new defence and security agreement with Indonesia to replace a treaty that was scrapped after Canberra led United Nations peacekeepers into East Timor in 1999. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said yesterday the government was aware that Indonesian President-elect Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had called for the security pact - negotiated by former prime minister Paul Keating in the mid-1990s - to be renewed last year during a trip to Australia.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Social and Security Affairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono emerged as the central figure in the negotiations, which focused on a deal to delegate the running of the government to Megawati.
