Leaders of islamic groups condemn terrorist attacks In the last few days it has become clear that the idea to blow up the restaurants of the J.W. Marriott Hotel and Ritz-Carlton Hotel might have originated from the Malaysian terrorist-on-the-run Noordin Mohammad Top, which is related to the Southeast Asian terrorist network of Jemaah Islamiyah. Also some pesantren (islamic boarding school) in Central Java are closely watched for their possible connection to that person.

Life in Jakarta back to normal after bombings It was just a short visit to Jakarta, just one night, but it took place after the first bombing in a number of years in Indonesia. Where media all want to talk about the results for Indonesia - as if the country is as small as Luxembourg or Brunei, and even that is still too big - locals seem to go on with their lives as they did before. While the area around the two hotels, J.W. Marriott and Ritz Carlton was still partly closed off, the rest of Jakarta looked like a Saturday morning when it was Saturday morning.

A deserted Kuta in November I have to admit, it is somewhere far outside any holiday season in the middle of November, maybe that will help create the almost deserted Kuta around this time of year. It was a short trip of about one hour from the beating cultural and religious heart of Bali, Ubud. With a virtually blue sky I left the spiritual village on a rented Mio (scooter), heading for the hot lowlands and crowds of Southern Bali. That crowd was a relative thing here, but seen from Ubud almost everything in the outside world looks crowded.

Bank Indonesia increases interest rate Bank Indonesia has increased its policy rate by 25 basis points to 9.5% as they continue their ongoing battle with inflation. Indonesia did not join Australia, who cut rates today by the highest since a recession in 1992. It is predicted however that today’s increase may be the last this year as the aim of the central bank moves onto supporting growth rather than continuing the fight against inflation.
