The ministry of Agriculture in the region of Banyuwangi, East Java, is to cull some 40 dogs that were discovered after they were transported from the island of Bali. The animals are currently in quarantine in Ketapang. They are culled to prevent rabies from spreading to the region after all of Bali is now officially a rabies-zone.

The Mount Batur volcano, located on the island of Bali shows signs of renewed activity. The first recorded eruption of the volcano was in 1804. Since then it erupted at least 28 times with intervals of between one and 39 years. Normally the 1,717 meter high volcano erupts in a strombolian eruption where lava just flows out of it's crater. The last eruption as on July 7, 2000.

Bali animal rights groups are barking mad at the current policy of widespread culling of stray dogs as part of the Bali government's response to the outbreak if rabies on the island. BAWA or the Bali Animal Welfare Association are circulating petitions and letting local officials know their displeasure with what they view as the "ineffective" anti-rabies program of killing all stray dogs fund in local communities.

The quake took place at 03:41 local time in the morning. The earthquake was not powerful enough to cause a tsunami, but was felt as far as the resort island of Bali and the city of Makassar in South Sulawesi.

Despite repeated warnings from the government to conserve sub-terrain water reservoirs in Bali, the Bali Post reports that the state water company PDAM has little hesitation to tap into Bali's diminishing underground water reserves. According to the report, in every municipality and regency of Bali, PDAM derives more water from sub-terrain reservoirs than it does from surface sources. This approach offers several advantages, including less competition with farmers for water from rivers and streams and the reduced cost of tapping into sub-terrain sources that requires less treatment than the more polluted water in Bali's rivers and streams.

The prolonged dry season currently being experienced in Bali is having profound impact on the island's ecology. As reported by Bali Post, of the 165 rivers found on the island, 73 have now run dry. Of the remaining 92 river still flowing, most of these are doing so with substantially reduced flow rates. A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 has hit the waters of the Banda Sea earlier today. The quake had place ar 09:51 local time (GMT+7) at a depth of 670 kilometers below the seabed. Because of it's depth, it did not create a tsunami. The center of the earthquake was 234 kilometers southeast of Bau-Bau and the tremor was felt as far away as Waingapu on the island of Sumba. The quake was also felt as a light earthquake in the cities of Kupang and Ende.

A member of the Indonesian parliament, Ali Mochtar Ngabalin of the Partai Bulan Bintang (PBB, Moon & Star Party) has said that the police is wrong in thinking that Mohamad Jibril is involved in looking for funds to pay for acts of terrorism in Indonesia. He said this after the family of Mohamad Jibril had a meeting with some of the members of the First Commission of the parliament. They asked the police to be closely watched so that he would not be intimidated.

Nine people were killed while three others went missing after a ferry sank in waters near the resort island of Bali yesterday afternoon. Ketut Parwa, head of the search and rescue (SAR) team of the island said that the ferry had 27 passengers on board. It left from Kusamba for the small island of Nusa Penida near Bali.

After sitting behind bars at Bali's Kerobokan prison for nearly eight months, a man on Interpol's Most Wanted List, 46 year-old Christian Burger, is now in France to face child sexual abuse charges. Burger, who has both French and Swiss citizenship, was placed on a plane to Paris on Wednesday, August 5, 2009, following the issuance of a letter agreeing to his extradition signed by Indonesia's President Yudhoyono. He has issued the needed letter last Monday, as was confirmed by Public Prosecutor I Ketut Sujaya, SH.

Indonesia has recorded 26 new A/H1N1 flu cases, bringing the total in the country to 112, Health Ministry said in a statement issued here on Tuesday. The 26 persons comprised two foreigners and 24 Indonesians, of whom 16 were being treated at hospitals in Jakarta, one in Medan of North Sumatra, six in Banten, one in Surabaya of east Java and two in Manado of North Sulawesi, Director General of Disease Control and Environmental Health of the ministry Tjandra Yoga Aditama said in the statement.

The Department of Health has currently listed 64 people as being positively infected with the new virus that has killed over 500 people worldwide - but none in Indonesia yet - according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

Confirmed cases of swine flu in Indonesia have nearly doubled, with the national total standing at 52, Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said on Thursday. Three foreigners were among 24 new cases of (A)H1N1, which included a dozen confirmed human-to-human transmissions, Supari told. All the patients were being treated in hospitals in the capital Jakarta, the tourist island of Bali and Balikpapan city in East Kalimantan province, she said.

The number of A/H1N1 flu cases in Indonesia has reached 20 as 12 new cases were confirmed on Friday, the Health Ministry said. Of the 12 patients, eight are now receiving treatment in hospital in the capital Jakarta, and four others are being treated in Denpasar, Bali, Lily Sulistyowati, a spokesperson of the ministry said.

On Wednesday, June 24, 2009, police capture two young men were apprehended in the process of snatching a purse near Ubud. One of the men, 20-year-old Lukman Hakim of Jembrana, Java, was shot by police in the thigh after he reportedly tried to evade capture.
