Yunus Effendi Habibie, has said that those who voted for the PVV (Freedom Party) may have contracted 'a terrible form of scaredness'. Bisnis Indonesia reports that the U.S. Government has invited Garuda Indonesia< to re-open its long-abandoned direct flights between the U.S.A. and Indonesia with assistance from the U.S. Federal Aviation Agency (FAA). Garuda terminated its flights to Los Angeles in mid-1998 that operated on a route that traveled in both directions between Jakarta - Bali - Biak - Honolulu - Los Angeles.

RMS nowadays just wants autonomy Indonesia is has reacted positive to the Maluku government in exile when they announced that they no longer fight for an independent state. The Indonesian ambassador to the Netherlands, Junus Effendi Habibie, told this to Wereldomroep. According to the ambassador there already is autonomy in the Maluku region, so the situation doesn't have to be changed anymore. A complete independence is rejected straight away.

EU lifts travel ban for some Indonesian carriers The European Union (EU) has lifted its restriction on four Indonesian air carriers from entering its territory, Director of Air Transport of Indonesian Transport Ministry Herry Bakti quoted EU ambassador to Indonesia Julian Wilson as saying here on Tuesday. The four carriers are leading carrier Garuda Indonesia, Mandala Airlines, Airfast Indonesia and Prime Air, Bakti said. All of them have potential to open routes to Europe, according to the ministry.

EU to send air safety experts to Indonesia The European Union will send safety experts to Indonesia for the review of an EU ban on Indonesian airlines which started last Friday, said the ambassador of the EU to Indonesia. All 51 airlines, including national carrier Garuda Indonesia, have been barred from entering European airspace because of safety concerns. Although no Indonesian airline currently flies to the EU, the ban obliges tourist agencies to warn customers that the airlines are unsafe if they sell package tours with these carriers.

Indonesia reopens border with East Timor Indonesia today reopened the border with East Timor because the fugitive rebel who caused the closure is no longer seen as a threat, according an official. "As of today our border is reopened," said Ahmet Bey Sofwan, Indonesia's ambassador to East Timor earlier today. The closure lasted just over one month.
