Indonesia to improve air defense in Papua The Indonesian Air Force will improve air defense in Papua territory to avoid foreign infiltration through the airspace. The National Air Defense Commander Sector IV, Air Marshall Asnam Muhidir, said the Indonesian Air Force will establish a radar unit in Jayapura to enhance Indonesian Air Defense in the eastern region in 2015.

Aircraft forced to land for having no flight permit A US civilian plane was forced to land at Sepinggan airport in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan and is being held at the Air Force base. Base commander Col Djoko Senoputro said here on Monday that the Cessna 208 with flight number N354RM was being held at the air force base.

Yogyakarta airport closed until at least November 20 The international airport of Yogyakarta, Adisucipto, will be closed until at least November 20, 18:00 local time. The volcanic activity of the Mount Merapi volcano is still very high, that it is decided to keep the airport closed for another five days to take away all uncertainty. Earlier, the airport had been closed to November 15, with a possibility to extend this, depending on the current situation.

Garuda invited to resume flights to the U.S.A. Bisnis Indonesia reports that the U.S. Government has invited Garuda Indonesia< to re-open its long-abandoned direct flights between the U.S.A. and Indonesia with assistance from the U.S. Federal Aviation Agency (FAA). Garuda terminated its flights to Los Angeles in mid-1998 that operated on a route that traveled in both directions between Jakarta - Bali - Biak - Honolulu - Los Angeles.

MD82's; the Wings Air trash bin for air transport At the end of last year I was able to experience how it was to fly a brand new plane as well as a very old one in just a matter of days. That very old one was a short domestic flight from Jakarta to Yogyakarta with Indonesia Air Asia, while just several months earlier I had traveled from Yogyakarta to Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia in one of the newest planes - at that moment - in use with the airline. It was the new plane that fascinated me most, while I only thought about the old one a few months later.

Garuda Indonesia to return to The Netherlands? EU to observe conditions of Indonesian airlines Minister of Transportation Jusman Syafei Jamal said that observers from the European Union will take a direct look at the condition of Indonesian airlines in connection with it's ban on airplanes from Indonesia from flying to it's airspace. "They will send a team to Indonesia but they also asked us to send them first five kinds of documents on Indonesia`s aviation," the minister said here on Saturday.

Garuda complies with IATA safety standards On July 4, 2007, Tempo Interaktif reported Garuda Indonesia is in the process of renewing its certficaton for compliance with the strict safety standards of the International Aviation Transport Association (IATA). According to Tempo, the national airline has already met 95% of the standards of the International Aviation Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), scheduled to be carried out in August.

EU to send air safety experts to Indonesia The European Union will send safety experts to Indonesia for the review of an EU ban on Indonesian airlines which started last Friday, said the ambassador of the EU to Indonesia. All 51 airlines, including national carrier Garuda Indonesia, have been barred from entering European airspace because of safety concerns. Although no Indonesian airline currently flies to the EU, the ban obliges tourist agencies to warn customers that the airlines are unsafe if they sell package tours with these carriers.

Malaysia to hold talks with Indonesia on territorial row Malaysia says it will hold talks with Indonesia to resolve a disputed maritime area in the Sulawesi Sea. "Now that both parties are claiming for possession, we will hold diplomatic talks to avoid untoward incidences," Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said told his staff at a regular morning assembly on Monday. "We are positive of achieving good results from diplomatic discussions," he said.

Indonesia summons US envoy over warplane incident Indonesia summoned the U.S. ambassador today over an incident last week in which a group of American warplanes made ready to fire on Indonesian jets that intercepted them in the country's airspace. Chief Security Minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Jakarta was very concerned the U.S. Navy F-18 Hornets might have violated Indonesian air space.

Officials: Gunung Papandayan dangerous Relevant authorities warned on Friday that activity at Mt. Papandayan, which experienced a major explosion early on Friday, has reached alarming levels, forcing thousands of people living within a radius of four kilometers (km) from its peak to flee. Mas Atje Purbawinata, a volcanologist from the directorate general for volcanology affairs and mitigation at Bandung, West Java, declared here on Friday that the volcano's status was raised to that of dangerous due to an increase in its activities after a major eruption at 6:33 a.m. on Friday.
