From there, passengers will use Garuda Indonesia planes and services to continue their trip.

Bisnis Indonesia reports that the U.S. Government has invited Garuda Indonesia< to re-open its long-abandoned direct flights between the U.S.A. and Indonesia with assistance from the U.S. Federal Aviation Agency (FAA). Garuda terminated its flights to Los Angeles in mid-1998 that operated on a route that traveled in both directions between Jakarta - Bali - Biak - Honolulu - Los Angeles.

The Jakarta Post reports that Garuda Indonesia has allocated US$100 million (70 million euro) for expenditure in 2010 as the first of five yearly installments that will increase the airline's present fleet from 67 to 116 aircraft. Garuda's finance director Eddy Purwanto told the press, "We plan to spend $100 million in capital expenditure in 2010 to buy more planes as well as to fulfill Garuda's other operational expenditure."

The Mount Karangetang volcano on the island of Siau in North Sulawesi has erupted again early this morning. The volcano started erupting last Thursday, but the intensity of the eruption is still growing. The volcano shot lava and molten rock as high as two kilometers in the air. Authorities have started to organise emergency shelters for those living on the slopes of the volcano.

The Indonesian airline Batavia Air has announced that they will start with two new routes. They will fly direct daily between Jakarta and Singapore as well as Semarang in Central Java and Singapore. The flight between Semarang and Singapore is fairly remarkable, as national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia ceased operations on that same route.

The head of the office, Dewa Made Ngurah, said that the culling of the dogs was done as a follow-up on reports from local residents.

The Indonesian government and aid agencies have begun building temporary shelters for hundreds of thousands of people displaced by last month's earthquake in West Sumatra Province. The 7.6 magnitude earthquake on 30 September left 1,117 people dead, more than 1,200 seriously injured and over 135,000 homes badly damaged or destroyed.

The Australian government has started checking hospitals in and around the city of Padang in West Sumatra to find some 60 citizens which are thought to be in the area when the earthquake struck. An official said that they were still unaccounted for at the moment. Earlier Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd zaid that there were no reports of Australians being injured or killed in the quake.

The company made this announcement earlier today. The number of deaths after the 7.6 magnitude earthquake yesterday afternoon keeps on rising. The Department of Social Affairs has said that 467 people have died as a result of the earthquake that shook the area of Pariaman and Padang in West Sumatra. Staff at the emergency center of the department have also said that they have recorded 421 people that were injured.

Padang Mayor Fauzi Bahar said Wednesday at least 75 people had been killed during the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that rocked West Sumatra earlier in the afternoon. A Boeing 737-300 belonging to Merpati has made an emergency landing on the international airport of Makassar in South Sulawesi yesterday morning. The plane, which had just left from Makassar for Surabaya, returned to the airport after just 20 minutes after departure. The plane had 115 passengers and crew on board. No people were injured in the incident.

The Social Affairs Agency in Jakarta has made plans to hunt down and arrest the people behind the begging syndicates in the city. Budiharjo, head of the agency, has said that there is a list of 33 names of people that are leading so-called begging syndicates in the capital city. Only 11 of these people are from Jakarta, while the others came from other places.

The Ministry of Transportation has said that it expected that more than 27 million people will hit the roads to be with their families during the upcoming Idul Fitri period later this month. The government will introduce a new policy on January 1, 2010, that will refund sales tax (VAT) spent on purchases by tourist visitors to Indonesia. At least 33 people died in a powerful earthquake, which struck off Indonesia’s populous island of Java on 2 September, officials said. “At least 33 people are confirmed dead. The huge delay of flight number QZ 7497 caused a number of passengers to get very angry. Eventually one staff member of the airline was taken hostage. All the passengers wanted was an explanation about the delay from the airline.

After sitting behind bars at Bali's Kerobokan prison for nearly eight months, a man on Interpol's Most Wanted List, 46 year-old Christian Burger, is now in France to face child sexual abuse charges. Burger, who has both French and Swiss citizenship, was placed on a plane to Paris on Wednesday, August 5, 2009, following the issuance of a letter agreeing to his extradition signed by Indonesia's President Yudhoyono. He has issued the needed letter last Monday, as was confirmed by Public Prosecutor I Ketut Sujaya, SH.
