"Based on a survey by BNN, the number of drug addicts rose from 3.8 million in 2008 to 4.2 million in 2011," BNN director Tyaswening said here on Thursday.

Drug addicts seen as criminals under new law The House of Representatives has passed a new anti-narcotics bill last Monday amid criticism from anti-drug groups saying that the new law will not help rehabilitate drug addicts. "This law classifies drug addicts as criminals and therefore subjects them to criminal charges, while doctors have said that drug addiction is a curable disease," said Asmin Fransisca, the coordinator for the Indonesian Coalition for Drug Policy Reform (ICDPR).

3.6 million drug addicts in Indonesia The Badan Narkotika Nasional (BNN, National Narcotics Brigade) in Indonesia has said that the country currently has 3.6 million registered addicts of various kinds of narcotics. It is estimated that only some ten percent of the cases around drug abuse surfaces, which makes people believe that the problem is in fact far larger.

Seminar reveals figures pointing to looming menace of HIV/AIDS The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to mount in Bali with health officials now estimating some 4,000 people have died from the disease on the Island. Each day 2-3 people die of HIV/AIDS adding at least 840 new fatalities to the mounting death toll each year. Meanwhile, health activists are warning that unless issues connected with the treatments, control and prevention of HIV/AIDS receive their proper due, the illness will, as reported in the Bali Post, sweep across the island like a AIDS tsunami.

'No abolishment of capital punishment for drug offenses' The government strongly rejects any proposals to abolish capital punishment for drug offenses on the ground of respect for human rights as all forms of criminal actions are in fact violations of these rights, as was said by Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh. Saleh said this at the session of the Constitutional Court in Jakarta to hear several of the cases of drug offenders sentenced to death who had filed requests for a review of articles mandating the death sentence.

Indonesia defends death penalty Indonesia's attorney general on Tuesday defended the country's death penalty, saying it deterred crime and that abolishing it would send the "wrong message." Jakarta recently executed by firing squad an Indian and two Thai nationals for smuggling drugs into the country. The killings, the first since 2001, triggered criticism by the European Union and human rights groups.
