The National Air Defense Commander Sector IV, Air Marshall Asnam Muhidir, said the Indonesian Air Force will establish a radar unit in Jayapura to enhance Indonesian Air Defense in the eastern region in 2015.

Garuda expands regional route network Bisnis.com reports that Garuda Indonesia will open 18 new regional routes commencing January 16, 2009. Pujobroto, the Airline's Corporate Vice-President, depicted the opening of the new routes as part of Garuda's overall growth plan. "The development of the new routes will be supported by 14 new Boeing 737NG that will begin gradually arriving in mid-2009," explained the Garuda official.

Papua earthquakes drive thousands into tent camps Disaster relief officials say the number of people in tent camps more than doubled to 17,400 after a pair of powerful earthquakes in remote eastern Indonesia. Authorities warned many people who fled their homes already suffered from malaria or respiratory illness and could become sicker. A 10-year-old girl had already been reported crushed to death in the West Papua capital, Manokwari.

Earthquake shakes town of Sorong An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter Scale shook the town of Sorong in western Papua earlier today. According to information from the Meteorology and Geophysics Office the earthquake that took place at 12:12 local time (GMT+9), was located at 78 kilometers southeast of the town of Sorong.

Quake rocks 2000km stretch of Indonesia A magnitude 7.7 earthquake has jolted a 2,000-kilometre swathe of Indonesia for two minutes, sending panicked residents fleeing to higher ground, fearful of a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of a tsunami, injuries or serious damage. The quake struck early on Saturday morning deep beneath the Banda Sea about 195 kilometres south of Ambon city in the Maluku Islands, the US Geological Survey said on its website.

WHO update on Dengue fever in Indonesia From 1 January to 4 April 2004 a total of 52,013, mainly hospitalized cases of dengue and 603 deaths have been registered with the Indonesian Ministry of Health. The overall case-fatality rate this year, particularly in Jakarta, has been lower than in previous years.
